On Sunday afternoon, one of the most active volcanos in Alaska's Aleutian arc, Mount Pavlof, began erupting and, in the process, sent an ash cloud 20,000 feet into the air. As the Associated Press reports, this follows on an earlier eruption in 2013 that sent up an ash cloud 27,000 feet high, and per Forbes and Wikipedia, it erupted again in mid-2014 sending ash up to 35,000 feet. The main impacts from this remote volcano's eruptions are aviation-related, and the tweets below from Sunday afternoon shows Pavlof's ash cloud already spreading among the clouds.

The eruption began at 4:18 p.m. local time and is ongoing.

Mount Pavlof has erupted more than 40 times since eruption records have been kept, including in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1986-1988, 1996-1997, 2007, 2013, and 2014. Its longest recent period of dormancy was 10 years, between 1997 and 2007.

The volcano is 592 miles southwest of Anchorage, and the nearest town, Cold Bay (pop. 108) is 37 miles to the southwest. Some may recall that a SFO-bound Delta Airlines flight from Tokyo had to make an emergency landing at Cold Bay in 2013 due to a mechanical problem — the town maintains Alaska's third longest runway, which was built as part of a US military outpost in World War II.

The Pavlof volcano has a nearby sister volcano that's actually named Pavlof Sister, but that one hasn't erupted since 1786.

Though photographer/filmmaker Alexis Coram is based in San Francisco, she's started to make a habit of traveling up to Alaska to take photos and videos of the Aurora Borealis (lights that appear in the northern sky, typically the result of geomagnetic storms). And, boy, we're glad she did, because in a week of a lot of frustration, sadness, and fear, the below video is a beautiful break.

Coram writes, "I've realized how many people don't have the luxury of seeing these kinds of sights for themselves and just how lucky I am to be able to see it, and also to share it. This has inspired me to get out more, see more, share more, and [hopefully] make more people feel like they were transcended to another place, if only for a moment or two." What a fantastic reason to create!

Coram says she "spent 4 nights outside of Fairbanks in February - two of those nights were entirely overcast and not a light could be seen. The other two nights were electrifying. I stood outside for hours - shooting and gazing in awe at the orchestral dance above and around me. I felt more awake than ever during those moments. I hope my interpretation in images portrays that feeling."

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced today that "she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race," according to AP.

If you recall, Gov. Palin ran with Sen. John McCain during the 2008 election. She is most famous for having an underage daughter who was with-child, a signature updo hairstyle, and providing Tina Fey with choice material.

After the jump, Anderson Cooper 360 has video of Palin's big announcement.

Big Earthquake Hits Alaska

According to the scary red font at CBS 5, "A strong earthquake has just jolted urban centers of Alaska." <a href="http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quak...

SF News

alaska

earthquake

Brock Keeling

According to the scary red font at CBS 5, "A strong earthquake has just jolted urban centers of Alaska." Earthquake.usgs.gov, lists "5.7 Southern Alaska, 36 minutes ago." Which sounds like it was a big one too. Well, sort of. More info as it comes in. Update: The epicenter, reports Seattle PI, "was 58 miles from the state's largest city, Anchorage, where the rumbled continued for several moments." Also, "the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reported the magnitude at a slightly weaker 5.3 and said no tsunami will be generated." This, of course, is bittersweet news on a relatively tepid news day.

McCain VP Pick: Alaska Gov. John McCain's running mate. (It will not be, as was guessed yesterday, Tim Pawlenty.) A bit of background: Palin is the youngest and first female governor of Alaska -- a state that has a rape rate that is double the national average.

Palin is also under investigation for allegedly firing Alaska’s Public Safety Commissioner because he refused to fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper, who is also her ex brother-in-law. (It seems he divorced Sarah Palin's sister, which prompted this mess.)

According to Wikipedia, Palin "hunts, eats moose burgers, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, and owns a float plane." What's more, she "holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association" and has admitting to using "marijuana when it was legal in Alaska, but says that she did not like it." (Liar.) Oh, and she also wears pearls and has a kid with Down syndrome. So...there you go.
