Authorities are investigating whether it was a targeted hit.

As Polish website, TVP World reports, Przemyslaw “Przemek” Jeziorski, 43, was gunned down in the Athens suburb of Agia Paraskevi, near his ex-wife’s home on Friday, July 4. He died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and neck. The shooter, who was described as a “tall, athletic man,” fled on foot, and Greek authorities are speculating that it may have been a targeted, professional hit. A car was reportedly waiting nearby, according to local media.

As Daily Cal reports, Jeziorski, was a Polish economist and associate professor at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He and his ex-wife, a Greek national he met in the US, had divorced six years ago and were involved in an ongoing custody dispute. She has reportedly cooperated with police and said she was unaware of anyone who would want to harm him.

Greek police are reviewing surveillance footage and investigating Jeziorski’s personal and family circumstances. His brother has traveled from Poland to assist with the case. No suspects have been identified publicly.

Jeziorski held degrees from institutions in Poland and the United States, including a doctorate from Stanford. He joined Berkeley in 2012 and became an associate professor and distinguished chair in 2018. His academic work focused on marketing, digital advertising, and antitrust issues. A 400% increase for 2011, amounting to $1 million, was the last straw and now the librarians are calling for a UC-wide boycott of the magazines, including all those academics who serve as contributors.

To wit: "UC Faculty and researchers author a significant percentage of all articles published in NPG journals and are a major force in shaping the prestige of its publications. In the past six years, UC authors have contributed approximately 5300 articles to these journals, 638 of them in the flagship journal Nature... UC articles published in Nature alone have contributed at least $19 million dollars in revenue to NPG over the past 6 years..."

As The Awl puts it, that would be "Academese for SUCK ON THAT."

Kid Hilariously Utters Filthy Word on TV at National Spelling Bee

(By Joe Kukura)

SF News

academics

children

cruse

education

four letter word

gambling

Scripps National Spelling

Spelling Bee

Bay Area Sports

swear

word

Brock Keeling

From the “We’ve watched this twenty times over today” department, footage from last night’s Scripps National Spelling Bee where little Sameer Mishra above thinks he’s been asked to spell a dirty schoolyard taunt, then repeats this dirty schoolyard in front of his mom, a national tv audience, and to the perky fake blond sideline reporter backstage. Best of all, he spells his way of this jam and goes on to win the 2008 National Spelling Bee!

National Spelling Bee Hits the Fan Today and Tomorrow

If you’re anything like us, you’ll get unnecessarily riled up woot-woot-ing for the Bay Area in any kind of regional representation-structured contest.
If you’re anything like us, you’ll get unnecessarily riled up woot-woot-ing for the Bay Area in any kind of regional representation-structured contest. If there’s a competition and any kind of trophy involved, screw it – we’re down. Add to that the factor that these kids are totally cute as hell with their awful posture and adorable lack of telegenic savvy, and the Scripps National Spelling Bee – the Super Bowl of these things – makes great entertainment.

And you know why else it’s great? Because you can bet on it. Sports books set their final odds prior to the competition yesterday, and they’ll be updated after today’s quarterfinal round. You can’t bet on individual 8-to-14 year olds (that would be awesome!), but you can wager on the winning gender, the over/under on letters in the winning word, and whether or not the winner will wear glasses. Your local rooting interests in these proceedings are San Jose’s Sylvia Shacker, described as a “12-year-old eighth grader at St. Victor School,” and Allison Koontz, an 11-year-old sixth grader representing Bristow Middle School in Brentwood.

The quarterfinals are broadcast live via webcast up ‘til 2:30 p.m. today. It’s also being liveblogged. Tomorrow the semifinals are on basic cable and the finals are on network tv at night. (Hey, wasn’t that writer’s strike supposed to be over?) The live correspondent is sideline reporter Erin Andrews, who is considered something of a sex symbol in places outside the Bay Area where the women aren’t all so exceptionally attractive. If you’re tuning in and trying to compete with the kids Jeopardy-style from your couch, try not to get depressed that they’re all so much smarter than you.
Yes, and it's a bad one. A few months ago, they said this might happen; and they said they might appeal the decision. This looks like it could drag on for months and months even though, at least as far as we can tell, it's inevitable that the place will get shut down.
