On last night's Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert welcomed House Democratic Leader and California's 8th congressional district representative Nancy Pelosi. Although she had previously told Colbert she would never appear on the show, Pelosi showed up to discuss Super PACs, abortion, Rick Santorum, and the Disclose Act. Bonus preface footage: Colbert eating a bowl of Rice-A-Roni and wearing ash on his forehead in honor of Ash Wednesday.

Thousands of Pro-Lifers March on Market Street
A major pro-life march, , is happening as we type. The cascade of Christians extends from Civic Center to the Embarcadero at present, all carrying signs like "I Regret My Abortion" and "Men Regret Lost Fatherhood." Also, there are tambourines, and nuns.
the likes of which we haven't seen in recent years on a San Francisco promenade
Latest Alleged Trend: Aborting One Fetus In Twin Pregnancy
According to a recent article in the New York Times Magazine, women are jumping on the apparently white-hot trend of aborting one healthy fetus in a twin pregnancy. Why? Because some of them only want or can only afford one child. One mother in particular, "Jenny," was pregnant with twins at the age of 45 due in large part to in vitro fertilization. However, she only yearned for one, so she turned the duo into a solo act. NYT Magazine, via Mommy Files, has her story:
Crisis Pregnancy Centers on the Hook for Misleading Ads
In today's consumer advocacy news, Bayview/Hunter's Point supervisor Malia Cohen is baring her teeth to go after misleading information from crisis pregnancy centers like First Resort or Alpha Pregnancy Center in San Francisco. The problem, according to a Saturday piece in the Chronicle, is that the centers often advertise counseling and medical care for women without actually offering anything more than an anti-abortion spiel.
Gavin Newsom Asks You To Support Planned Parenthood
First NPR/PBS, then AmeriCorps, now Planned Parenthood? On Friday, the House moved forward with plans to strip funding for Planned Parenthood, a controversial yet critical agency that provides birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and other lifesaving care. This happened one day after Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) moved the chamber to powerful silence after describing her own abortion.
Photos: Walk For Life, San Francisco, 2011
Saturday was a glorious day, wasn't it? Very warm and walkable for a January day. It was also an oddly serene day for abortion rights, or lack thereof, along the waterfront. On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, hordes of anti-abortion zealots came to the city for the annual Walk For Life fete.
Abortion Rally, Pro and Con, Takes Center Stage In S.F.
Saturday, January 22, marks the 38th anniversary of Roe. v. Wade, which established a woman's right to have an abortion. On that day, both sides of the argument will come together, if you will, in San Francisco to duke it out. Verbally, that is.
Planned Parenthood Opens In Mission District
Making its return to San Francisco, Planned Parenthood just opened a new clinic at 1650 Valencia Street, reports The Chronicle. They also took control of another part-time clinic.
Annual Abortion Rally Brings Out Feverish Pro/Con Supporters
The anniversary of Roe v. Wade brought out all kinds of crazily passionate folks to the Embarcadero on Saturday. Braving the rain, anti-abortion ilk showed up for the fifth annual Walk for Life West Coast, a march about Jesus. The pro-abortion rights counter-protest, Day of Action for Reproductive Justice, happening at the music concourse (right next to a crazy man shouting about 9/11 being an inside job), was put on by the Bay Area Coalition for Reproductive Rights.
Celebrate Roe v. Wade And Patrick Swayze's Chest While Helping Keep Abortion Safe & Accessible In California
On January 30, celebrate the passing of Roe v. Wade (the court officially issued its decision on January 22, 1973) a screening of Dirty Dancing. (Revelation time: Your editor has never seen this iconic movie about, we can only assume, unkempt choreography. Yeah. We know. Even though it's got the mind-numbingly talented Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop in it, we just never managed to see Dirty Dancing. We don't even know who "Baby" is, exactly, or why she was christened with such an unfortunate name. But apparently, someone in the film has a botched abortion, hence its screening later this month for abortion rights.)

On Tuesday at the steps of San Francisco City Hall, activists gathered to rally for abortion rights -- specifically to protest the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.
Abortion Rally At City Hall At Noon
Today at noon, loads of pro-abortion (and, no, we will not call it "pro-choice," a sunshine-lollipop term that, ultimately, helps play a part in having abortion rights stripped away; if you can't even say it, why should your old white male leaders give a piss of concern about it?) folks will rally at City Hall to protest the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which will allow "unprecedented restriction on women's access to abortion."
Field Poll: California Democrats More Tolerant Than in 1977, Republicans Less
The Field Poll came out with their August 2009 California Opinion Index (PDF), which indicates that California Democrats and Non-Partisans have become more progressive on hot topics in the past thirty years, whereas Republicans have pretty much stayed the same or are more conservative.

Steve Rhodes was at last night's vigil for Dr. George Tiller, the activist who was murdered this past weekend by an anti-abortion zealot.
Vigil for Murdered Abortion Doctor Tonight at SF City Hall
Pro-abortion people, listen up: You know that doctor that was murdered this weekend? There will be a vigil for him (and for keeping abortion legal) tonight in front of City Hall, starting at 7 p.m. See, Women's Health Care Services founder, Dr. George Tiller, was shot and killed while attending church services with his family this weekend. A deranged lunatic, Scott Roeder, 51, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Anyway, word has it that the rally vigil for Tiller is tonight. So, if this kind of thing is your bag, head over to the Civic Center area to voice your frustration. UPDATE: Here's the official Facebook page. (Note: Please don't put candles on the Lincoln statue!)
Branching out on Behalf of Gay Marriage: A Good Thing, Bad Thing, or Somewhere in Between?
Just about everyone agrees: gays can win more support for civil equality by partering with ally-communities. This is a nice-sounding idea, particularly in the San Francisco bubble. But what does it mean -- and is there a point at which collaborating stops being beneficial?
Photos from the March for Life Rally, SF, 1/24
Well, it was quite a weekend for abortion, wasn't it? The anniversary of Roe v. Wade brought out all kinds of fruits and nuts to show their support for either side of the abortion argument. One side being that a magical creature in the sky will send you to the big pot-au-feu below the Earth's crust if you terminate your pregnancy; the other being that there are too many people on the planet thus we need to find a way to get rid of a few. Or something like that.
Photos from Today's March for Life Counter Protest, San Francisco, 1/24
The March for Life and March for Life counter protest are currently underway in San Francisco. Over 25,000 pro/anti ilk showed up today to voice their opinion on abortion. Here are a few scenes from the protest.

Abortion enthusiasts? Listen up. This weekend will be the abortion weekend to end all other abortion weekend.
Erected 'Abortion Hurts Women' Billboard Tries to Shock Bay Area
Pro-abortion folks got an eyeful this week when a mammoth pro-life poster was erected in San Francisco on December 31. The 20-foot x 60-foot billboard can be seen by more than 100,000 vehicles on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge overpass at Fourth and Bryant Streets in San Francisco.
Dead Woman Found Outside SJ Planned Parenthood
The body of a dead lady was found outside an abortion clinic in San Jose this morning. According to reports, the woman was neither homeless nor killed at the site. Officers also made it a point of declaring that "the woman appeared not to have been killed, then dumped at the building." (Wait, what?) Maybe this is the latest form of nutty anti-abortion protest: Leave your body at the doorsteps of Planned Parenthood as a final act of lunacy? Strange. Anyway, a police officer on the scene went on to say that "Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with this .. It's just a pure coincidence."
Nancy Pelosi Dead Wrong on Abortion, says SF Archbishop
Sorcerer Archbishop George Niederauer is hopping mad at Nancy Pelosi. Why? Because of what she said about the church's teaching on abortion. It seems on NBC's Meet the Press last week, the congresswoman from Baghdad by the Bay, while defending her stance on abortion, claimed that "church leaders throughout history haven't been able to define when life begins." Not so, says Archbishop Niederauer. The Catholic church has considered abortion evil ever since religion was concocted in the creative minds of ancient ad execs, he declares. The SF Archbishop goes on to say that he wants to have a "private talk" with Pelosi. Gulp. (CBS 5)
The Silent Scream Screened at Milpitas Middle School
The Palme d'Or-robbed gem landed a confused and sick Milpitas' Russell Middle School teacher in the fiery hot waters of bureaucratic hell after he recently screened this anti-abortion film in his chemistry class. According to CBS 5:

See You at the Anti-Abortion Protest, Ladies!
This year's abortion bash, Walk for Life-West Coast, will take place tomorrow, Jan 19, on the lawn area of Justin Herman Plaza down by the Embarcadero from 10:30 a..m. to 1:30 p.m. And we can't wait! What are you going to wear? We're going to sport our beaver fur-trimmed coat, because...well, we're sure there's a smug murder joke in there somewhere. But if you're able to get up that early on a Saturday morning, you all should head down to the Embarcadero to voice your support and/or disdain. (Why this can't be settled with a pillow fight is beyond us.)
