A special message from your soon-to-be-emerita co-editors Rita and Eve! As some of you may already know, this is a period of growth for us here at SFist. SFist is a labor of love for everyone on our staff -- but as we've grown, so has Gothamist's need for a dedicated, full-time editor for the site. We're thrilled to announce that long-time SFist sports editor Jon Shurkin will be taking on this role, making... [continue]
Tonight we're staying up late late late for the Late Night Picture Show at the Clay (2261 Fillmore). Tonight they're screening Cremaster 3, Matthew Barney's not-available-on-video 2002 film, and with a special in-person appearance by visual effects supervisor Matthew Wallin. Tickets are $9.75, and are available at the door. If you're way ahead of us on this one, what are you up to tomorrow? The Main Oakland Post Office (1675 7th St) is closing out... [continue]
It's the kick-off party for the Bicycle Film Festival. Starting at 9 tonight, the shindig's at BOCA (414 Jesse Street, just off 5th). And, hey, even if you can't make tonight's do, you should hit the film fest, running this Friday and Saturday at the Victoria Theatre (2961 16th Street, just off Mission). You can buy an all access pass for $29 (whatta deal!) or a single ticket is $8. See the entire program here.... [continue]
Maybe it's just us, but when we start hearing big numbers (for example, the national debt, the number of people who died during the influenza pandemic of 1918, or our student loan debt), our eyes glaze over. So, when we hear statistics like "400 volunteers, 7,000 boxes of books, 300 tables and 200,000 books in over 50 categories", we might ordinarily have to reach for the NoDoz, but, wait: we're hearing these numbers from some... We're heading to the Brava Theater Center (2789 24th Street) for the screening of Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers, a benefit for The 2006 CounterCorp Anti-Corporate Film Festival. Director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price) "examines what happens to everyday Americans — and Iraqis — when corporations go to war, revealing the inside story of the soldiers, truck drivers, widows, and children whose lives have been changed forever as a result... It was a Wednesday morning and I was waiting for the bus. If you're a nine-to-fiver, you know the drill. Swelling crowds, contending with the inconsistent transit schedule, the oratorical dialogue with the cold foggy air. Will the bus come? Is there a chance in hell you'll actually make it to work on time? But this Wednesday morning was a different routine with a different set of rules. I should note from the onset that... [continue]
Friend of SFist Johnny Funcheap sent us this note and pictures. Have you seen the work of this poet? Take some pictures and send them our way! i noticed something in the street on my way to work that i thought might be of interest for sfist. there's a little guerrilla artist who's been writing poetry in north beach on columbus just south of broadway in near Specs. normally i hate this kind of stuff... Are you kidding? They'd come to take away our laptop, (and our pleather pants!) if we didn't go see Bruce "Master of Cyberpunk" Sterling speak at CCA (1111 Eighth Street, at 16th and Wisconsin) tonight. Bruce isn't just a noted blogger or author , he's also a founder of the Veridian Design movement, which "Creat(es an) irresistible demand for a global atmosphere upgrade." It's all happening tonight, at 7, in the Timken Lecture Hall.... [continue]
SFist Reader Caitlin poses the same question many of us have asked: "Why does Muni seem to have fewer (and, therefore, packed) buses running than scheduled?" And we're sure the problems Caitlin describes aren't restricted to the 43. Is there anyone who can help us understand why we all seem to be seeing fewer, more crowded buses? How hard can it be to figure out what the busy lines are? For weeks now, I've seen... [continue]
Busy, bookish night! First, we're heading over to (if you work someplace conservative this link could be NSFW) Good Vibrations (603 Valencia Street at 17th) to have Stephen Elliot sign a copy of his new book, My Girlfriend Comes to the City and Beats Me Up, at tonight's party to celebrate its release. The party runs from 6:30-8:30, but we have to rush out sooner, so we can get to... Berkeley's Black Oak Books... [continue]
SFist Wendy, contributing Last week we attended the premiere of Lunafest, a festival of films “by, for, about women” at the Herbst Theater. Lunafest proceeds went to the Breast Cancer Fund. The nine shorts were a treat, and we can’t do them all justice here, so check out the Lunafest site and keep them in mind when opportunity presents itself again. Among those that have stuck with us over the past few days are Lori... [continue]
Subject: quest for San Francisco buyer, unsolicited ask for help Dear editor of SFist, my name is Jan Karpisek and I'm a 25 years old Czech painter, out of academy since May 2005. I'm writing to you because of your location. In summer 2001 our school studio had a big show in Prague at the Old City Hall and while I was not present, someone from San Francisco bought two my paintings. You can find... [continue]
Torontoist visits the site of a new Frank Gehry structure, stalks "the elusive Bahamas streetcar", and watches Tom Green get surgery. Phillyist rejoices in the Phillies' wild card chances, mourns the injuries sustained by Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse, and goes pirate on our asses. SFist notes that Guns and Roses were in town, that San Franciscans are taking over reality TV, and that the San Francisco Chronicle's skills of original nomenclature could use some... [continue]
We're off to the Off market Theater (965 Mission Street) for the final performance of local bad boy Harmon Leon's The Infiltrator Goes USA. For only 10 bucks, you, too, can witness this "brand spanking new show with brand spanking new videos and tales!!!!!!" -Harmon gets booked on a Christian talk show, posing as a guy who fronts a Christian speed-metal band. -Harmon joins a civilian vigilante group of senior citizens called the Minuteman Project... We already liked Toad’s Food & Drink for its good food, friendly service, $2 draft beer happy hour (5:30 PM - 7:00 PM), and mellow vibe. There’s something about Toad’s fresh tasting buttered bun that makes us smile–when we’re not wiping the Angus burger juices off our lips, that is. We also appreciate having the burger set up (lettuce, pickle, onion, tomato) on the side, for those "no onions tonight, self" times. Toad’s is... [continue]
We can't wait for 8 p.m. to get here so we can head down to the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts for the Bay Area premiere of David Dorfman Dance's underground. Dorfman's previous works have been applauded for the accessibility they bring to contemporary dance -- or, as they say, "this is not your father's contemporary dance company." In his (Dorfman's, not your dad's) latest piece, his inspiration is The Weatherman, set to music... [continue]
We're hitting the Main branch of the SF Public Library (100 Larkin Street) for Central America on a Shoestring, a talk by Lonely Planet's commissioning editor Greg Benchwick. Benchwick’s Central American travels started in the mid 1990s when he traveled by chicken bus from Costa Rica to Guatemala – and that was just the start for his Latin American adventures...Benchwick will present highlights of Central America and suggest itineraries and trips for those going for... SFist Rita has been going on and on about the District 6 City Life Supervisor Candidate Forum, or, as we refer to it at SFist HQ, "Everybody Hates Chris: Special Debate Edition!" See District 6 candidates Rob Black, Chris Daly, Matt Drake, George Dias and Robert Jordan (sadly, neither George nor Robert agreed to interview requests from SFist, so no links for you!) answer to The Usual Suspects' Jaime Rossi, as he poses quality-of-life questions... Mondays are hard! We've scoured our inbox for invitations or event releases and came up empty handed. Hey, maybe we'll just go gorge ourselves at Little Star Pizza? Oh no, wait, they're closed, too! Damn you, Monday, for keeping us from drunkenness or gluttony! Damn you to hellllll! At trying times like these, we pull up our funcheap SF email for the week (if you're not on this email list, get on it!), but even... [continue]
As we sat down to write this week's Best of the -ists post, a car blaring "21 Questions'" passed by our house. And that started us thinking about how some of the best -ist posts out there have at their hearts questions, some of which are answered, and some of which are left open. Check out the Best of the -ists from this week, and see if you agree. Londonist answers the questions "How much... [continue]
