Bed Bug Allegations

Bed Bug Allegations

Via Mission Mission, a Yelper took it upon herself to warn fellow customers of a local bookstore that she had allegedly gotten bed bug bites while sitting and reading Twilight in one of their comfy armchairs. [Update: We have no evidence she was reading Twilight -- we were just subtly riffing off of Mission Mission's sarcasm -- SFist.] more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: "Let It Be," Russian-Style

In this special video, a large Russian man bearing some resemblance to Newt Gingrich in a sailor costume gets up and sings the Beatles' "Let It Be" really badly. There is also a chorus of other Russian sailors and a full band. Who knew they didn't have their own translation of this song? Maybe it is true what they say about English being the prettiest language... [via WOW] more ›

Outer Sunset Emerges Victorious

Outer Sunset Emerges Victorious

On Wednesday, SFist asked you to vote for your favorite foggy neighborhood, pitting the Sunset against the Richmond. Over 1,500 votes came in. The winner, creaming her competition my miles, was the Outer Sunset. The gorgeous and peaceful Outer Richmond, much to our surprise, came in dead last. But that's in due part to there being not nearly as much to do (e..g, bars, restaurants, stores, cafes) compared to the other fog-drenched hoods. more ›

Get Your 15 (or 2) Minutes of Fame on Trauma

Everyone's soon-to-be favorite, Bay-Area-based NBC drama featuring a helicopter-trauma-unit is looking for extras! [Ed. Note: Your SFist Editors will be LIVE-BLOGGING the Trauma premiere this coming Monday evening, because yes, we are that dorky.] Yes, that's right, you too could get bloodied up in some crazy, action-packed, group scene like the one they shot at Duboce Park, or the one they shot at the Embarcadero market. Particularly swell for the unemployed who always wondered who had time to go be a random extra on a TV show, we recommend this job to anyone who doesn't mind waking up early and standing around a lot. What's Going On Here, Irony?

We know it closed a week or so ago, but hoarder-like Haight and Ashbury bookstore Forever After Books was a favorite -- a favorite in the cranky-people-who-run-small-businesses-on-upper-Haight genre, that is; where have they all gone? -- even if the bookstore proved it couldn't live up to its name. more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: "No Signal" Horror Movie Cell Phone Montage

Brilliant pop culture blogger FourFour gives us this brilliant montage (which must have required, like, months of work) in which he edits together the myriad moments from recent horror film history in which the screenwriters got lazy and employed the no-cell-signal excuse for why their characters are totally screwed. Enjoy. (See his earlier "not here to make friends" reality TV montages here and here.) more ›

Photo: "Constellation Sutro" Over SF

This photo comes to us via SF Citizen, along with the missive, "You know that Autumn has come to San Francisco when you see a crescent moon inside of the nine red stars that make up the Sutro Constellation." OK, laugh if you want, but despite the blog's linking to a post about the Sutro Tower, we still didn't get it and spent five minutes searching around to see if there was such a constellation, and wondering how you could get a photo of nine red stars without touching it up. Afternoon Palate Cleanser: "He-Wolf" Spoof of Shakira's "She-Wolf"

It looks like we have a new "Single Ladies" when it comes to spoof videos on YouTube (particularly from dance-talented gay men), and it's Shakira's "She-Wolf." While it may not inspire a Kanye stage-storming or make non-verbal babies jiggle and shake with glee, the song certainly has moved many (including Jimmy Kimmel) to launch immediate parodies and tributes. Perhaps, in this hyper-imitative digital age, that is the mark of great art. The above spoof, which is a frame-for-frame remake, was made and performed by YouTuber Andrew Foster. We were reminded yesterday of the recent Whole Foods boycott that's been gaining steam in the past month. Photos: Park(ing) Day

             + 1 more

It was a hot day in San Francisco for hanging out on the street during the annual Park(ing) Day, which happens worldwide. Good thing there was plenty of foliage to soak up the CO2 in many of the spots, many of which were spotted downtown and in the Mission. It was duly noted that San Francisco has plenty of green spaces when you seek them out, but it's definitely refreshing to see a small oasis here and there in the middle of such urban settings. more ›

Our Old Friend Zennie: Calvin Klein Display Racist?

Our Old Friend Zennie: Calvin Klein Display Racist?

Our old trekkie pal Zennie Abraham is back on his City Brights blog questioning the display currently in the windows at the Calvin Klein store in the Westfield Centre. A reader wrote in to say s/he thought it provoked images of African-American lynchings, given the ropes and, we suppose, the fact that these are literally black mannequins. We would argue it looks a lot more like circus/gymnastics imagery to us, given the trapeze and all, but sure, someone could make an argument that the bodies randomly slung by two ropes are questionable. Anyway, it's hardly a question for national concern, but Zennie has put up a poll and he's asking you to vote. We've embedded the poll here, so, for Zennie's sake, please let him know what you think. more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser, 420-Style: "When You're Low"

Ever wonder what musical theater people do when they move to L.A. to make it big? They smoke/eat a lot of pot and make YouTube videos containing big production numbers about smoking/eating pot. Today's palate cleanser comes to us from Jake Wilson's YouTube series, The Battery's Down (as in "the Bronx is up and the Battery's down...") in which a young actor's struggle to make it big in New York has led him, inevitably, to L.A.. This latest song called "When You're Low" was penned by Micah Schraft and John Hill.

Someone Please Buy the Albion Castle and Rent it Out for Cool Parties

Someone Please Buy the Albion Castle and Rent it Out for Cool Parties

Curbed reports, via SocketSite, that Albion Castle, the former Albion Porter Ale Brewery in Hunters Point, is up for sale again. The castle is a historic building featuring 200-foot deep caverns that lead to a natural springs next door. It used to be the home of Laughing Squid’s web hosting tech support center and was host to their blog launch party in 2005 (which we still kick ourselves for not attending), soon before it sold for $2.1 million. The castle has been restored, and the current asking price is $2.9 million. The newest owner had planned on bringing back the brewery and opening a restaurant, which probably would have been a feat in this economy. Check out Scott Beale's photos of the castle before the restoration. more ›

New York publication of note Vice -- that glossy, in-your-face magazine that features stinky Brooklynites wearing too-tight clothing and interviews with depressed music bands -- has come out with a very special San Francisco issue. In addition to featuring an interview with (former?) San Francisco resident Chis Daly ("If San Francisco were a giant, sprawling asshole, Chris Daly would be the inflamed hemorrhoid that just won’t go away"), they have an adorable neighborhood section (which balls out blows away 7x7 Magazine's bizarre and questionable neighborhood issue), a brilliant slam of Baghdad by the Bay that reads us to filth ("Would you like to be part of an entire social movement to extinguish and gentrify a once cosmically diverse metropolis?"), and of course, a section on our city's sourdough bead-like famous gay population.
