Photo credit: artgoodhitlerbad/Flickr Even though the German language is aesthetically questionable, the above flyer advertising Deutsch language tutoring has changed our mind. Apparent expert in German language studies, Paco, has come up with this ingenious ad (and how cute is sad Hitler?!) asking you to forget the country's former Nazi ruler and participation in the execution of over six million Jews--which much of the world already did anyway--and learn the chunky, consonant-heavy tongue for...

Our sister site, DCist, brought to our attention the nationwide USASexGuide's massage parlor online guide, which allows men to freely discuss their experiences at local massage parlors while giving helpful reviews. Much to our delight, there's a San Francisco thread, which is a must-read. (To check out DCist's breakdown of all the joyous happy endings, go here.)...

Pal of SFist Julian (star second-grader at Starr King's Mandarin Immersion program -- ni hao, Julian!) picked up this "queer" dollar bill last week at 26th and Harrison in the Mission. We recall receiving these bills as babysitting payment back in the '80s, and they make great gift-accessories for kids as well. But we had never before noticed how interesting the back of the $2 bill is compared to all the other paper U.S. currency,...

For many a San Franciscan, Laura Linney's portrayal of Mary-Ann Singleton sparked their move to the Bay Area. And after reading Deborah Solomon's interview with Linney in the last week's New York Times Magazine, we found yet another reason to adore her: SOLOMON: As a graduate of Brown University, do you think acting requires intelligence? LINNEY: No. Brilliant....

SFist commenter jacksevanroo's facetious reference to buying a geodesic dome in response to Larry Ellison's questionable tax break on his "functionally obsolete" compound, reminded us about this Silicon Valley geodesic dome home ("Brigadome") that went up for sale last month. If we could buy it, we would -- hippie stigma be damned! (Buckminster Fuller was the most under-rated genius of the 20th century, as far as we're concerned.) Located in the San Francisco peninsula foothills...

In effort to beef up our anti-Republican credibility--while helping diminish San Francisco's continually creepy anti-Hillary sentiment--here were have a delightful and much needed anti-McCain video. Photo credit: jamiedivine Can someone translate the above, please? We assume it says the same thing, "The Army National Guard Wants You," but we want to know. You see, if so, it's a brilliant ad. It gets to have its cake and eat it too: not only does it reach out, presumably, to the people it's trying to kill; but it also touches on the xenophobic, git-'r-done nerve of war-hungry youths who happen to...

Photo credit: artolog Oh my. Um, yeah, we'll let Flickr's artolog explain the above. I've lived here for over 30 years, but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I was initiated into one of the secret wonders of San Francisco, the so-called "two o'clock titty" of St. Mary's Cathedral, which appears at 2 pm, and is a staple of academic life for Catholic schoolboys. Hee. Ahem. Any of you kids born and...

And speaking of methamphetamines, this above always unleashes a big brouhaha in the bent community: to chastise or not to chastise zippy drug use. The most recent ad campaign--a four-month media blitz produced by the California Methamphetamine Initiative called "Me, Not Meth"--can been seen throughout the city, mainly in the Castro and SOMA arrondisments. And those ads you've seen on TV, featuring men sitting at their desks and talking into webcams? Part of the same ad and directed by Joel Schumacher. SF Aids Foundation has more info here....

Your optimistic San Francisco Chronicle has decided that the best way for you to imagine how many murders take place in Oakland each year (and where) is to plot them out on a Google map mashup. Each marker, once clicked, shows the victim's name, date they were killed, age and cause. On some, there are links to the corresponding news story. We're not sure about you, but we think this is a morbid mix of...

We swiped this from Mr. Beale over at Laughing Squid. It's a delightful image of Violet Blue brandishing a gun embossed bag--called the “Guardian Angel” bag by Vlieger & Vandam--to which we say: give it. That bag is gorgeous. Period....

Photo credit: Christopher Roberts It's nice to see a recurring theme going on with graffiti in SF. So arty and whimsical. So less--oh, what is the word we're searching for?--ghetto. Dede would approve, dharlin. Yesterday's royal blue "i love you" vandalism was shot on a Muni train, this one was found at Pierce and Waller on a "tree diaper" today. Hmm. Curious. Is this the work of an AAC art project, or an ecstasy...

Photo credit: Christopher Roberts Here we see a simple blue Sharpie--and judging by the whimsy of the "i," written by a female--used to express affection for another person or, though it's doubtful, the Muni train itself. We believe the graffiti speaks to another person since any love for Muni is suggestive of psychosis. Anyway, it's kind of nice to see graffiti on the outside of a Muni car instead of tagged on a window;...

Oh my. Here we have a shot of a protester taken at Saturday's CoS protest at the Washington/Columbus/Montgomery intersection. Since we found it at encyclopediadramatica, we have to ask: real or fake? Yes, yes -- most of you are so over the whole flash mob thing. But for those of you who aren't jaded and bitter old turds, check out today's flash mob froze over in Berkeley at Upper Sproul Plaza as the Campanile struck 1 p.m. today. We've only seen pictures of frozen flash mobs -- which could have been any photo of any large gathering, really -- so this video is kind of nifty....

Oh, please, someone find a good home for this mammoth vagina couch that's for sale up in Mendocino. While we don't want to look at the thing much less touch it, certainly there's an SFist reader out there who wouldn't mind adding this piece to their decor. The ad posted on Craigslist is as follows: Pink Upholstered Vagina Couch Date: 2008-01-15, 11:46AM PST For Sale - beautiful pink "vagina couch" that I made in...

At the risk of, like, totally bragging, SFist received another mention in W Magazine! In yet another Jennifer Siebel interview! They can't get enough of her! In Emily Holt's intriguing profile of Jen, she rehashes comments Siebel made on SFist last year. If you recall, Siebel typed the the immortal words in the comment thread of our Ruby Rippey-Tourk post, "I have tried to see Ruby's side of the story but unfortunately everyone near...

Photo credit: Steve Rhodes Mean! You don't do that to Steve Rhodes! Yesterday's protest was a huge success in luring people of all ages and creeds to Market Street and City Hall. A particularly ripe bunch of "protesters" showed their support to all of us tired passengers on the 47 Van Ness bus around 9:30 p.m. They were taking the bus to the "end of the line," aka Fisherman's Wharf. Apparently, they were drunk for the very first time, and it was most likely their first protest...

Flower seller in Lucien Labaudt's 1936 mural in the Beach Chalet. A tulip's life is short enough, particularly in the far westerly reaches of our city/county. We seem to remember that in past years, the tulips at the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden (in the shadow of the windmill in Golden Gate Park) didn't quite until the official beginning of spring. This year, though, the GG Park folks say that "tulips are expected to be...

Today in The Gate, we happened upon Peter Hartlaub's article on "Breakup Songs to Die For." Reminiscent of Nick Hornby's classic, High Fidelity, Hartlaub puts together his list of great breakup songs and the criteria for what makes these songs so great. 1. "A truly great breakup song should be filled with so much rage that the subject could include it as Exhibit A in his or her restraining order." Hartlaub cites "You Oughta Know"...
