Heavens no. Though, what with its windows covered in newspaper, some you might have thought as much. Thankfully, Judy Rodgers' near-perfect ode to slow, simple, artisan dishes will not fall to the same fate as fate as Jack Falstaff. According to Eater, Rodgers is simple taking a few days "to do some renovations, and from the looks of things, there's some heavy-duty construction at work." Zuni is scheduled to reopen next week.

Sacramento Gay Bar Coins "The Gavin Drop" Cocktail
The Chronicle's Carla Marinucci reports from this weekend's Democratic Convention in Sacramento that area gay bars were packed with Newsom supporters who couldn't get passes to his street party, which was in their neighborhood. (Apparently, the crowd was expected to be at 3,000, but there were reportedly only 400 people there a half an hour before the event.) The Depot, which was located right near the stage, was serving up $5 "Gavin Drops," which feature blue curacao, simple syrup, sweet and sour, and Smirnoff melon because "he's a honey." Sounds like hangover material to us. We wonder if Gav has tried one. Apparently, The Depot patrons eventually crashed the party, which we suspect upped the fun level quite a bit.

A Kinder, Gentler Bauer?
Not on our watch, hopefully. But Eater came across 7x7's article concerning a critic's responsibility (namely, after a scathing re-review of Acme Chophouse, Michael Bauer's) in these trying economic times. Sara Deseran 7x7 food scribe goes on to (inexplicably?) say that, "in fragile times like these, it's a critic's responsibility to think not once, but twice." A curious, albeit worrisome, point of view.

Berkeley Votes to Ban Foie Gras
Pro-life zealots on the Berkeley City Council voted Tuesday night to pass a resolution supporting the city's position against the serving the deliciousness known as foie gras. The fattened liver dish, for those of you who don't know, is the plumped liver of a duck or goose that has been force-fed 20 percent of its healthy body weight. What it lacks in moral fiber, it more than makes up for in rich, full, savory flavor. After the vote, Berkeley Councilmember Jesse Arreguin whined to the Daily Cal, "The importance of this item is to raise awareness of the really inhumane practice of force-feeding geese and ducks to create foie gras." Restaurants serving the dish after the law goes into effect can be fined $1,000 per day. Tuesday's vote comes on the heels of San Francisco getting squeamish on the dish earlier this year. Also, for those of you curious about foie gras, you can taste it at one of these local restaurants that typically feature it on their menus.

California Wine Still Recession-Proof, At Least the Cheap Stuff
Americans drank 467 million gallons of California wine the past year, up 2% from the previous fiscal year, despite the deepening recession/depression gripping our great, drunk nation. Retail value of CA bottles was down from 2007, as were restaurant sales, reflecting budget concerns. But rest assured that inexpensive wine-swilling remains in the budgets of many Americans. Incidentally, sales of CA wines to foreign countries are up 8%.

Top 100: Bauer Giveth, Bauer Taketh Away
San Francisco Chronicle food scribe Michael Bauer came out with his annual Top 100 this weekend. California and American restaurants, as expected, weighed heavily on the list. A few new additions were Jack Falstaff, Nopalito, and the Nettie's Crab Shack. And those that got cut? Bar Crudo, Cafe Majestic, Cav, Poleng Lounge, Shanghai 1930 (noooo!), Slow Club, and Tartine Bakery, just to name a few. Any of your favorites not make the list?

Read This: Sodium Girl
While your editor would commit hara-kiri if he ever had to live a sodium-free lifestyle -- if possible, he would also like to comeback in another life as a salt lick -- he understands that some of you must due to dietary restrictions. For those of you who can't eat salt, there's Sodium Girl. It's site for living a salt-free lifestyle in San Francisco (e.g., eating at Spork, making a hot bowl of paneer). The author started the site after being recently diagnosed with Lupus and looking down the barrel of liver failure. You should check it out. (via Eye On Blogs)

FuncheapSF Misleads Readers with Fictitious Yet Plausible "Potatoes and Grubs Festival"
We had bookmarked FuncheapSF's post about the Second Annual Potatoes and Grubs Festival, which was supposedly happening tonight in the Mission. Gullible as we are, it took us quite a while to question the following April Fools dead ringer because it is San Francisco after all: "With the March rains over, and as lawns have dried out, grubs (yes, those buggy little squirmy larvae) are at their culinary peak according to most experts (reaching their peek sweetness of the season). Over 40 different bay area restaurants serve culinary creations using both potatoes and grubs in unique combinations." Only until we proceeded to click on three different links (one of them entitled "Two Girls, One Grub"), which all led us to the ol' Rick Astley YouTube video, did we figure it out. Rick Astley never gets old for us though.
