Yesterday at high noon on Ocean Beach a group of about 25 otherwise warm people, brought together by social media and a shared desire for a meaningful beginning to 2012, jumped in to the Pacific Ocean. While the Ocean Beach plunge might not have had quite the attendance of our counterparts at Coney Island back East or the stamina of the Dolphin Club's Alcatraz swim, it did offer something decidedly San Franciscan. By which we mean there were naked butts. Possibly NSFW video of the new tradition, after the jump: [ more › ]

If you woke up to 2012 with your mouth tasting like an ashtray, as we're sure many of you did, you can take some solace in knowing it wasn't entirely due to overconsumption of cheap champagne and Parliament lights. The rare air in the Bay Area is literally clogged with the soot of a smoldering 2011. While we dig the idea of saying goodbye to the old year with a blazing Viking funeral it's not exactly making it easy to breathe around here. Abducted squirrel monkey and Twitter sensation Banana Sam has been returned, only slightly worse for wear, to the San Francisco Zoo. The 17-year-old, 2-pound monkey was found Saturday evening by someone in Stern Grove, who managed to coax him into a backpack and return him to the zoo, where zookeepers say he was hungry, cold, and shaking but otherwise fine and uninjured. As Banana Sam's Twitter alter-ego wrote on New Year's Day, "The zoo said, I was 'hungry, trembling, and thirsty' when I got back. JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THIS MORNING RIGHT?!!" Also, he added, "That's the last time I ever crawl into someone's backpack who says we're going to an 'awesome party, dude.'"

Los Angeles has their very own carsonist(s), and it's been a tense holiday weekend for residents of Hollywood and West Hollywood as at least 55 cars were "firebombed" by what investigators believe may be Molotov cocktails "perhaps in a container able to penetrate car-window glass." It remains uncertain whether these incidents have all been the work of a single individual, and early this morning police announced that they had detained a person of interest in the case — a man driving a blue minivan with Canadian plates who may or may not be from Germany. They say it's too early to tell whether the man can even be considered a suspect. A string of eleven fires broke out in the span of two hours this morning beginning around 1:30 a.m. [ more › ]

Time, man. You think you get it. And then you realize that the Ancient Greeks and Romans were so calendar-challenged that they had to insert random months every few years to make sure the seasons lined up properly. Then you have the Gregorian calendar, and the day in 1752 when England the U.S. decided to adopt it, effectively losing 11 days all at once. It's kind of insane. (You may have also heard that Samoa just decided to switch time zones, and Samoans didn't get a Friday. Like any good viral sensation, this one has it's very own twitter account from which we can track Banana-Sam's crosstown exploits. If the little fella is to be believed (and why wouldn't we trust a tweeting monkey?), security out there at the Zoo was "laughably simple" to breach, but he still had to wait an hour for the L-Taraval before he could escape the Outer Sunset.
