Jimmy Eat World is a big band that has been coming to the Bay Area ever since they are a little band. In that time they’ve covered a lot of ground (they even played Noisepop). Tomorrow night they’re bringing their infectious power pop-rock to the Fillmore, one of the city’s most historic venues. Rick Burch, the band’s bass player, answered a few of our questions about how much he loves the area, and about......

Maria Taylor -- singer-songwriter from Alabama who stopped in SF recently to play a gig -- had her stuff stolen this past Wednesday. Her touring van, naively parked over at Mission and Eighth Sts., was broken into and the contents inside swiped. While Taylor's bass has been recovered at a nearby pawn shop, here's what's still missing: Left-handed RED Gretsch Tennessee Rose Guitar Left-handed Martin Acoustic Guitar Left-handed WHITE American Fender Precision bass (w/......

DATING: Those loopy dames over at Femina Potens are having a Queer Speed Dating night -- a bi-monthly benefit to increase visibility of women and transgendered artists -- which turns out not to be nearly as much fun as it sounded at first. Still, if you're a lonely fruit, head over to the Upper Market area tonight. Who knows? You might meet that special someone. 8 p.m. // Femina Potens Gallery (2199 Market Street)......

As fitness crazes become evermore bizarre (and also awesome—trapeze yoga? Hula hooping? Yes!!), we’re secretly hoping that tap dancing catches on. If it does the credit for all those hipsters tap-tap-tapping away will probably belong to Tilly and the Wall. Percussion? Yah, they’ve got it, in the form of some seriously happy feet. In addition to being a great gimmick—corny and folksy and seriously hip—the tapping works with their brand of pop. Which you......

(By Joe Kukura) You've seen that filthy online “Shaquille O’Neal rapping” video? The one so obscene that even Biggie Smalls would have told him to tone it down?. [TMZ.com] Spain against Germany Sunday for the Euro 2008 championship. And, yes, this is what the foreign people in your favorite bars are screaming about. [ESPNsoccernet] Fresno State actually just won a major national sports championship! [bleacher report] Warriors’ first round draft pick Anthony Randolph “has......

CLUB: This evening's club night over at Pink (oh, by the way, do hit Bar Bambino before going over! It's just next-door and the area's best new restaurant, in our opinion) called "Buffet" should be re-titled "Buffet of Vagina." Why? Because they're serving up a night of all-female DJs. Kate Kelly hosts DJs Chelsea Starr, Pony P, and Mama Hen as they spin electro and rock sounds. And this is one of the venue's......

After a small electrical fire at the Fillmore canceled last week's sold-out Dethklok show, and sent many a fan into an abyss of despair, it is on again. Yay! Last night's show at the Fillmore was on fire. Literally. Before headliners Dethklok hit the stage, an electrical fire was "sparked during Soilent Green's opening set," according to SF Weekly. Fans were ushered out of the building posthaste. Yikes. Sadly, Dethklok couldn't go on, and the show was canceled. Dethklok's MySpace page breaks the news to their fans: SF Show at the FILLMORE CANCELLED BECAUSE OF FIRE: Last night June 6th a small electrical......

Different strokes for different folks, and all that. There’s a ton of great concerts to check out this weekend. One that SFist will be hitting is the Parenthetical Girls and Los Campesinos tonight at Bimbo’s. Need to be sold? Zac Penninton from the Parenthetical Girls and Ellen Campesinos! do their best with a short version of the SFist interview to sell you. Besides being great musicians, they’ve got some mad logic skills. The best......

Here at SFist, we are not impressed with percussive instruments. Calling a drum circle "music" is like calling crosswalk stripes "a painting." But there's something sort of impressive about an experienced cable car bell-ringer, so gosh darn it we can't quite manage to fully roll our eyes at today's annual Muni Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest (noon in Union Square), at which Gavin Newsom and several local news personalities (please Jan Wahl, please Jan......

Photo by Steve Rhodes Suspiciously littered around SFist HQ near South Park, these flyers (featuring a mysterious 515 area code from some far off land called "Austin, Texas" "Des Moines, Iowa") have been tacked up to lampposts and sides of buildings for the past two weeks. What happens when you call the number? Well, not much. We punched the flyer's digits. Here's what happened: the male-voice recording at the other end thanked us for......

Hmm. This is just about the most exciting thing to happen in San Francisco. Ever. Or at least, it will be. See: Liz Phair will play a few shows this summer, featuring her crooning (or croaking, depending on your opinion of her) the entirety of her brilliant debut album Exile in Guyville (1993) -- an epic "song-by-song reply to the Rolling Stones' 1972 album 'Exile on Main Street,'" which at the time was considered......

Our favorite album so far this year is “Re-Arrange Us” by husband and wife duo Mates of State. Beginning with the first single, “Get Better”, the album is a consistently enjoyable pop album. Mates of State are playing at Slim’s tomorrow and we’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky SFist reader.......

OMG! Ricky Reed, of Wallpaper. fame, is missing. Gone! Completely vanished. Unfortunately, his stellar world tour has now been cancelled. Fans are riotous with the news. The far reaching world tour included stops to Tanzania, Tucson and Tokyo. We even heard Wallpaper. was venturing to Antarctica and the Vatican City to make sure he reached every last fan. He was last seen somewhere in the Amazon's bamboo forest. We hope he doesn't meet up......

Who knew that the art of listening to records in over-sized headsets while rip-roaring high at nightclubs DJing paid so well? We didn't. DJ Lamont who, with all due respect, we've never heard of before, has enough dough to buy ad space--evil Clear Channel ad space!--on a bus station at Masonic and Turk to promote the education of his mad DJing skillz. (For more info on learning how to become a master DJ via......

FIESTA, FOREVER: Cinco de Mayo is a holiday honoring "an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla," according to Wikipedia. And on that night way back in May 5, 1862, said forces celebrated this win with chips, salsa, frozen margaritas, and body shots. Or so we assume. No one really knows for sure. That said, here are a couple of Latin American-ish......

Time to tear yourself away from all the awesome flicks at the SFIFF and get some exercise. Or at least stand up for a bit. Hit Bottom of the Hill tonight to check out Laura Veirs. Even if you are not a pre-teen Texan girl, or super into snow leopards, you’ll probably dig the music. We first interviewed Laura about a year ago-- although she's not offering a free tattoo this time round, her......

Photo from Thunderheist CLUB: Those zany and offensive Vice Magazine kids are back in town this evening to pour vodka down your throat, shove blow up your nose, and have you up until all hours. The nerve of them. And we wouldn't miss their party for the world. Tonight at Mezzanine, Vice Live's party has Black Ghost and Thunderheist to get you on the dance floor. When we last reported on the fate of North Beach's Jazz at Pearl's, blues chanteuse Kim Nally's bee-bop joint, it was shuttering its doors. for good. Again. Now, according to Tablehopper, whose words we live by, Jazz at Pearl's is staying open. Again. Why? Due to a hefty divorce settlement on Ms. Nally's end, or something like that. We're tickled to hear that this cabaret style joint is staying open. Maybe we'll actually check......

Although hating on hipsters is, oddly enough, very hip right among self-consciously nerdy Bay Area denizens, SFist must delve into the scene for a moment. Why? Well, to point out some glaring omissions with regard to DJ Times magazine's America's Best DJ nominee list. According to ASD, loads of local, talented, but predictable faves--such as DJs Theo, Gabriel & Dresden, Kaskade, DJ Shadow, Mark Farina, DJ Qbert, DJ Behrouz, Bassnectar, Claude VonStroke, Miguel Migs,......

Here's your chance to win a spot on Grand Ole Party's guest list for their upcoming concert with Rogue Wave on Saturday night at the Fillmore. We promised and we never break our promises. (Well, at least we try not to.) This isn't the first time that you've been able to check this band out for free. This week you have the opportunity to catch a bunch of bands that were just here in the past few months. This time they are all playing different venues. First off, tonight Basia Bulat will be opening for Devotchka at the Fillmore. Last time we saw her she was at Bottom of the Hill. Her stuff was good then; it still is. If you haven't checked her new album out, listen here. Oregon natives,......

Even though we really want them, we'd feel guilty taking them for ourselves. And since no one seems to be biting, All Shook Down is giving away free pairs of tickets for tonight's Goldfrapp show to the first two people who comment. Have at it. Update: Contest closed, y'all. SF Weekly now totally owes us Goldfrapp tickets.......

Over at Laughing Squid--who, by the way, was barred from taking a picture of Google's stupid, squishy, all-white booth over at Web 2.0 today; please, anyone attending Web 2.0, take as many shots of Google's booth as you possibly can--we came across this creepy mashup of mama polygamist's Stepford Wife-ish "it's not a compound" diatribe on ABC's Good Morning America. Big band, small venue. People begging for tickets at $200 a pop on craigslist. Not a bad situation to be in if you've just released your second EP. Birds of Avalon will be playing tonight at Bimbo's. Sure, they're opening for The Raconteurs (gotta love Jack White and Brendan Benson), but we think you should be there to check out BoA. In addition to some seriously great rock music, BoA has some seriously great......

Starting this week off right, The Teenagers are playing their sleazy Parisian pop music at The Independent on Tuesday night. Michael does vocals and plays the bass, Dorian does guitar, computers and vocals, and Quentin is the songwriter and lead vocalist. These three Parisian punks are still the foul-mouthed horny dudes they were when they were 13. Nothing has changed except for now they get to sing about sex instead of just talking about......

This one goes out to all you Gen-Xers out there. The Internet-loathing band Metallica will be at Rasputin this weekend for "Record Store Day." (Also: what?) All Shook Down claims that: Wristbands will be handed out starting at 8 a.m. April 19 for the band's 2 p.m. visit, when Metallica makes its first local public appearance in a very long time to a very limited group of 400 fans. As we walked down the steep, dungeon-like stairs at the back of the Great American Music Hall, the ceiling inched toward our heads with every step. By the end of the staircase it felt as if we were dropped off in the imaginary world of Alice and Wonderland. Instead of chasing the white rabbit, we quickly followed the tour manager through the twists and turns of the underground halls. While we never met up......
