Washington State Signs Gay Marriage Bill Into Law; Marriages Might Begin in June

After winning approval from both the Washington state House and Senate in recent weeks, a historic piece of gay-marriage legislation went before Washington governor Chris Gregoire today for her signature. Signing the bill in the presence of multiple gay-rights activists, Gregoire said, "I'm proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal." Opponents are vowing to fight the law before it's set to take effect June 7, but this was nonetheless a big victory for the cause of gay marriage, which frequently finds itself being fought in courts and via ballot measures, rather than arising wholly out of a state legislature. Or the deli department either, apparently. KTVU brings us the story of one local mother of two and her awkward run-in with Quan at a local supermarket: [ more › ]

As most of you have likely heard by now, a lot of hardcore Burners got screwed out of Burning Man tickets this year because of that whole lottery kerfuffle. Despite all the good intentions and earnest admonitions of organizers, the intractable fact of American greed has messed everything up, and lots of people are already out there scalping. Now, the New York Times is covering the story (not even the Bay Citizen), perhaps smelling the unmistakable odor of a jumping shark, mid-flight. Power broker Rose Pak is a genius. In addition to getting Ed Lee into the mayor's office, cursing like a truck driver on crank, and lording over a good chunk of San Francisco, she's doesn't give a shit who she offends at City Hall — and she does it publicly to boot. Take, for example, her sassy performance of a lifetime on Saturday while emceeing the Chinese New Year parade, which turned into a roast of many noted San Francisco leaders. As Supervisor Eric Mar, John Avalos, and George Gascon looked on nervously, here were a few golden nuggets Pak unleashed. In the Bayview, another 19-year-old man was found shot in the back after an incident Sunday morning. The victim, who is expected to survive his gunshot wounds, told police he was standing outside on Harbor Road when he was approached by an armed man he didn't know. According to an SFPD spokesman, when the victim took off running, the shooter hit him in the back and escaped. Despite previous rescue efforts by Virgin America and S.F. Animal Care & Control, it seems San Francisco still has a surplus of the pocket-sized pooches thanks to the sort of people who obsess over Paris Hilton's accessories or a fast food spokespup from 15 years ago. Tomorrow, to fill New York's demand for Chihuahuas as Valentine gifts, Virgin America will send off another shipment of dogs rescued from Animal Care & Control in a special red carpet flight from SFO to JFK. A lighter piece of news from Saturday: 17-year-old world-famous squirrel monkey, Banana Sam was returned to his cage Saturday after a month of quarantine, and most of his cage-mates left him alone and did not give him too tough a time about getting kidnapped. Zookeepers at the S.F. Zoo report much "vocalizing" among the seventeen other squirrel monkeys upon his return, but Sam "laid low so that nobody would pick on him, and now he's fully re-acclimated." Nearly a year after a major earthquake and tsunami shook and doused Japan, some 25 million tons of debris that washed out to sea when the tsunami receded is headed toward the California coast. We're talking cars, boats, pieces of houses, you name it. Whatever didn't sink has been slowly making its way across the Pacific Ocean, and experts believe we'll start seeing large objects start washing up on beaches as soon as next month. Not only did the cabbie recognize the former mayor climbing in to the backseat, hoping to be driven down to the Hotel Vitale — but the cabbie also remembered a very specific part of one of Willie's columns.
