Your 2012 Film Night In The Park Schedule, With Beverage Pairings

Because we can't wait to bundle up with you under a blanket in Dolores Park in the middle of July, here is your 2012 Film Night in the Park Schedule presented with film-appropriate drink pairings, of course: more ›

We love a good montage! Here's one showing 36 Hollywood actors in their very first film roles, including a young Jack Nicholson in 1960s Little Shop of Horrors (the original Roger Corman film that inspired the musical), and a nubile young Johnny Depp in 1983's A Nightmare on Elm Street. more ›

Video: San Francisco Is Backwards

Video: San Francisco Is Backwards

Via Bold Italic, Ryan Jay and Alexander Shahmiri's short flick looks at the downtown and the Financial District in reverse. Yes, it was filmed two years ago, but we're just getting around to it now. And thank God we did. It's a soothing piece. While the Bold Italic isn't a fan of the FiDi, we kinda are. It always seems like an oddly calm place (from afar, of course, since we don't work there) since it lacks the pretension and self-consciousness of other S.F. arrondissements like the Mission or the Castro. Anyway, enjoy this backwards moment. more ›

Should Castro Bars Ban Bachelorette Parties Too?

Take note, gay bars, The Abbey in West Hollywood has taken a stand against the scourge of bachelorette parties, as reported over at LAist. The bar has decided enough is enough, and despite being an enormous venue with room to spare most evenings for gays and straights alike, they're putting the kibosh on bachelorette fetes until marriage equality is gained across the country, and they're calling on other gay-owned establishment to take similar stands. more ›

Mr. Marina Competition: Aggressive Alcoholism In The Name Of Charity

             + 4 more

Last night in SOMA, fourteen of the Marina District's finest 20- and 30-something male specimens took the stage at Mezzanine to sing, drink, and charm their way to the title of the district's most stereotypical dude in the inaugural Mr. Marina competition. Depending on your opinion of this particular breed of San Franciscan, the event (which raised over $80,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) was either an entertaining pageant of neighborhood in-jokes and exaggerated bro-isms, or a couple hours of dick wagging and aggressive onstage alcohol consumption. more ›

Flowchart: When It's Okay To Say 'Gay'

The wonderful folks at Laughing Squid bring our attention to this handy flowchart created by comic Sam Killermann (of It's Pronounced Metrosexual) that lets you know when it's appropriate to use "gay." He notes, "Gay isn’t a bad word, folks. But it gets used that way so often people feel uncomfortable using it correctly. As much as it’d be wonderful to say that homophobia is an issue of the past, it’s not. Let’s continue reteaching our society what it means to be gay." more ›

Priscilla Chan Bought Wedding Dress Under Fake Name, Saves Children's Lives

Powerful yet starved socialites, we're done with you. (Not really!) Please step aside and collect your schwag bag on the way out. We have a new obsession, and her name is PRISCILLA CHAN. Billed as the Kate Middleton of Silicon Valley, Chan was recently married to a social media CEO of some significance. He's not what's important. Chan is what's important, see. For example what, you ask? For example this: Chan's wedding dress, a charming piece designed by Claire Pettibone and deliriously yet perfectly titled "Sky Between the Branches," was purchased under a fake name in a little-known boutique in Denver, Colorado. Retailing for $4,700, comparatively cheap for wedding dresses that can run upwards of $25,000, Chan selected her own dress in lieu of having one made especially for the young newlywed. more ›

MTV's Real World Premiered Twenty Years Ago Today, SF Installment Stands As Best Season

MTV's Real World Premiered Twenty Years Ago Today, SF Installment Stands As Best Season

Gothamist reports today that MTV's The Real World — where young people stopped being polite, and started getting real — aired today for the very first time. Created by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, the show was based off of a 1973 documentary series An American Family. After the Hawaii season, however, the show seemed more like something based off of Cinemax After Dark. But before The Real World dipped its toes into ill-advised roommate-on-roommate promiscuity and binge drinking, San Francisco played host to the series' arguably greatest season. (Fine, it might tie with NYC's Season One.) We are, of course, talking about Pedro, Cory, Judd, Pam, Mohammed, Rachel, and Jo. (Puck too. But, ugh, whatever. Puck was awful.) more ›

We've come a long way, folks. They thought they'd come a long way in 1961 when they had things like automatic dialing phone, the first video phones, and satellite communications. But imagine having problems in business like phones with no answering machines. Anyway, take a trip back to the Mad Men era in this weird, long-winded promotional film from AT&T ca. 1961. We suppose they screened this for executives in conference rooms using, like, a projector? Anyway. Etiquette Week: How to Go to the Park

Etiquette Week: How to Go to the Park

We're now, finally, wrapping up National Etiquette Week at SFist with this our sixth and final (we promise) installment. Much like bicycling, park-going is a topic that always tends to get San Franciscans (and commenters! Hi, guys!) pretty passionate. Whether you're the type who enjoys a debauched day in the sun in one of the city's only warm spots, drinking Sauvignon Blanc/Tennessee Tea/Tecate and toying with the idea of buying a mushroom chocolate; or you're the sort who brings a quiet picnic and a toddler or three, and you'd like it very much if they'd put a small fence around the new playground to protect it from romping dogs, you probably have a set of peeves and unspoken rules of your own. Well, here are ours. more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Zooey & Siri, Continued

By now you've all probably seen that grating ad in which the insufferably content (and quirky!) Zooey Deschanel spends a rainy day at home talking to her iPhone and dancing around the house. The internet has responded with a number of alternate endings and parodies for this commercial, including these funny "outtakes" featuring professional Deschanel impersonator Lyndsey Doolen, who really does sound just like her. Our favorite of the lot so far, though, is this video, "Siri & Zooey: The Conversation Continues," featuring Siobhan Thompson as Zooey, and Siri as herself. Divisadero Bar Would Like Bay To Breakers Revelers To Drink Their Beer, Use Their Bathroom

Madrone, a respectable bar that we like on Divisadero, happens to be right on the path of this weekend's 101st Running of the Tools Bay to Breakers. Although it has been surprisingly empty during the drunken footrace in previous years, the bar is looking to take advantage of the crowds in 2012, as evidenced by this enticing offer for beer and refreshments they've had up in their window at Divisadero and Fell Street all week. more ›

SFist Reviews: 'Endgame' and 'Play' at A.C.T.

SFist Reviews: 'Endgame' and 'Play' at A.C.T.

We'll begin by admitting something that will likely color the tone of this review, and should affect how seriously you want to take our opinion: We love Samuel Beckett. The late, great playwright and novelist, who was Irish and an early disciple of James Joyce but wrote his plays primarily in French, was a brilliant writer capable of stripping down modern dystopia and human frailty to its most basic, primal, absurd elements, and still manage to be funny about it. more ›

Etiquette Week: How to Conduct Yourself Like a Human in a Bar or Club

As you've hopefully caught on, it's National Etiquette Week here at SFist, and so far it's prompted lively discussions about children in restaurants, backpacks on BART, and where and how jaywalking might be acceptable. One More Guerrilla Muni Ad: Du Beers

One More Guerrilla Muni Ad: Du Beers

So, here's another effort by the Muni Adbusters, tweeted by a friend of a commenter (which is kind of better than a friend of a friend). This one would suggest that the culprit in this guerrilla art campaign/sly critique of capitalism is not the most careful of spellers — some have also pointed out the lack of familiarity with the real Tartine, which does not sell doughnuts. This time, it's jeweler and accused blood-diamond seller De Beers that they're targeting, except they spell it "Du Beers." more ›

There Have Always Been A**Holes In S.F. Who Don't Want Anything Pretty to Be Built

There Have Always Been A**Holes In S.F. Who Don't Want Anything Pretty to Be Built

Architecture critic John King brings us a delightful look back at the vocal opposition to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge — a class of people who should be grouped amongst the greatest fools of history next to segregation proponents and Nazi sympathizers. And we learn from this brief history lesson that there really always have been whiney jerks with no vision in this town who never want things to change and will make noise about any beautiful new thing anyone ever wants to build. more ›

Video: Amazing Nebraska Woman's Crazy Homophobic Rant

The most amazing video you'll see all day, hands down, will definitely be this footage of a woman named Jane Swoboda getting up to speak at a city council meeting this week in Lincoln, Nebraska on the topic of a proposed LGBT protection ordinance. She is obviously touched (as in nuts), and somehow manages to go from talking about Winter Wipeout to intestinal ruptures from anal sex in like ten seconds. Chronicle Sports Writer Wins Headline Of The Week

Look, it's no secret that we love headlines around here. Headline writing is a lost art. Don't try to tell us tweets are the same thing. Because they're not. Tips For Cyclists & Motorists On Bike To Work Day

Tips For Cyclists & Motorists On Bike To Work Day

(By Alissa de Vogel) The San Francisco Bike Coalition's annual Bike to Work Day happens tomorrow, Thursday May 10th. With a 71% increase in commuter cycling in San Francisco over the last five years, tomorrow's Bike to Work Day promises to be the biggest one yet. In honor of this annual celebration of cycling, the SFBC has prepared a record 27 energizer stations along commuter bike routes. Between 7:30 am and 9:30 am tomorrow, cyclists can stop at any of their locations to fuel up with coffee and a bagel, and grab a free Bike to Work Day reusable tote bag. And in the evening you can celebrate all things cycling at Public Works' Bike From Work party.btwd2012">27 energizer stations along commuter bike routes. 7 Reasons To Love San Francisco

There are countless stories to tell in San Francisco, but sometimes a picture says so much more that mere words. Each Tuesday (or Wednesday!), we present to you 7 Reasons. (Our sister site LAist does the same thing, which we found too inspiring to resist.) Much like Photo du Jour highlighting a nifty image shot by our readers, 7 Reasons features recent photos from the SFist pool on Flickr showcasing the uniqueness of San Francisco. And with that, here are 7 reason why S.F. is, for lack of a better word, rad. more ›

San Francisco 23rd 'Smuttiest City,' Says Men's Health

San Francisco 23rd 'Smuttiest City,' Says Men's Health

Men's Health has a breakdown of the top 100 "smuttiest" (i.e., porn-happy) cities in the United States. Orlando, Florida comes in a No. 1. However, San Francisco ranks a distant 23rd and Oakland 79th when it comes to porn. The criteria went something like this: compiling the number of DVDs purchased, rented, or streamed (AdultDVDEmpire.com); adult entertainment stores per city (StorErotica.net); rate of porn searches (Google Insights); and the percentage of Cinemax-subscribing households (SimplyMap). You will have to take the results with a massive salt lick, though. (What self-respecting gay uses AdultDVDEmpire.com or Cinemax for ejaculatory assistance?) The top 100 is as follows: more ›

Here are a few pictures of the festivities, and more pictures here. more ›

1-2-3-4-5 Senses Working Overtime: Buddhist Science at the Exploratorium

East meets West in a fascinating exhibit at the Exploratorium for just a few more days. "The World of Your Senses" delves into the surprising parallels in how traditional Buddhism and modern Western science understand our sensory perceptions. The exhibition was created by Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns who have been studying western science while living in exile in India. Several of them are on hand to discuss the show with visitors, including one who is demonstrating the traditional Tibetan painting style used for the exhibition panels. More pictures here. Really, make time in your busy schedule for this remarkable chance to chat with the monastics and learn more about how our own bodies work. more ›

Everyone Hates Party Buses

Everyone Hates Party Buses

Drunken hordes descend on North Beach every weekend, but they're not all recently graduated frat boys and brogrammers from the Marina tripping their way down Broadway from Polk Street. A lot of them arrive via bus! Chartered party buses, that is, from faraway lands called Modesto and Watsonville. And now, club owners, like the guys at upscale(ish) Monroe (473 Broadway) are trying to get rid of the ugly element that arrives aboard those buses, usually already drunk from all the drinking they've been doing during the trip, and sometimes looking for a fight. more ›

Video: Berkeley Freshman's Rad Automated Dorm Room

Video: Berkeley Freshman's Rad Automated Dorm Room

Now, this is the roommate we always wanted in college. UC Berkeley freshman Derek Low turned his dorm at aesthetically-jarring Unit 2 into something special and magical. Low fashioned his drab room on the fourth floor into a bachelor pad replete with automated curtains, motion detection sensors and voice-activated light control. He calls is BRAD, the Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm. "It cost about two to three hundred dollars," Low explained to The Daily Cal. "Each device was in the same range of about 20 to 30 bucks." more ›

New Blog Pokes Fun At Lower Haight Homeless Lady [Updated]

New Blog Pokes Fun At Lower Haight Homeless Lady [Updated]

Well, this is enthralling/depressing. A new Tumblr account (noted in today's Morning Links) called Lower Haight Sleeping Bag Lady asks obnoxious Lower Haight residents and its fans to submit photos of a presumably homeless lady noteworthy for carrying around her sleeping bag and sleeping in it. The unidentified woman might be mentally ill (again, presumably), and she looks downtrodden... to say the least. Ha ha? Anyway, it would be nice if the owner(s) of the site had some sort of donation page for their target of amusement/ridicule. Or whatever. Just a thought. more ›

Lower Haight Laundromat Dubbed 'The Worst Place In The World'

Lower Haight Laundromat Dubbed 'The Worst Place In The World'

Hell hath no fury like a neighborhood blogger who can't find a functioning washing machine. Over at Haighteration, Andrew Dudley has got a bone to pick with the extremely sad Oak and Scott Laundry (991 Oak Street). He not only calls it the "worst place in the world," he goes on to shoot pictures of just about every machine, because there is something broken about pretty much all of them, including the change machines. more ›

Uber Launches On-Demand Mariachi Service For Cuatro De Mayo

Uber Launches On-Demand Mariachi Service For Cuatro De Mayo

For their latest publicity stunt, locally-based on-demand car service Uber is rolling out a new service that is less focused on getting taxi-weary riders to their tequila bar of choice and more about bringing the party to them. On Friday, May 4th, Uber will have three SUVs transporting roving mariachi bands around San Francisco. Bringing one to your particular party, bar or street corner promises to be as simple as using Uber's (debatably overpriced) ride service. more ›

Look At RuPaul Drag Race's Sharon Needles' Beer Mug Gown [Spoiler Alert]

While the rest of the city wrung their hands over a gaggle of alpha males smashing windows on whimsically posh Valencia Street, the real world was mainlining last night's finale of RuPaul's Drag Race, the most culturally relevant and critically astute TV programming since Roots. Making last night's show all the more important? Sharon Needles. And beer. A Pittsburgh drag queen with punk rock coursing through her veins, she's much more than that. She turned into a cult figure during her Logo tenure, snatching the crown away from the formidable Chad Michaels and Phi Phi O'Hara, this season's bitch. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Last night Needles sported a beer mug gown that made an all-too-brief appearance. And you must look at it. Right now. more ›
