As improbable as it seems, someone has gone and invented a "diet avocado," which contains 30% less fat than your regular, run-of-the-mill, mortgage-payment-consuming avocado.

According to Grub Street, the diet-vocados come from a "fruit company over in Spain," Eurobanan's Isla Bonita brand.

They're officially called "Avocado Light," and are apparently milder and somehow juicier? What's more, they also ripen faster, and oxidize (i.e., rot) slower than regular avocados. By all counts, it's meant to solve all the external problems of a regular avocado — assuming, of course, you thought that there was anything wrong with avocados in the first place.

There's no accounting for taste, but the real bummer here is that us folks stateside aren't going to get a chance to blow our mortgage payments on this wonderfruit just yet. They're focusing on distributing Avocado Light in Spain first.

The announcement of this revelation has inspired nutritionists to come out in defense of the good old classic Avocado. One TIME Health feature on Avocado Light opens with, "You do not need a diet avocado. I repeat: You do not need a diet avocado." They, along with just about everybody commenting on the Avocado Light point out that the fats in regular avocados are what many doctors call "healthy, monounsaturated fats." As well, TIME Health made the suggestion that avocados could assist in diet control and weight loss when they highlighted a study carried out by Loma Linda University. That study showed participants reported a "significant boost in self-reported satiety" when they added half an avocado to their meals. That said, TIME also notes that the study was funded by the Hass Avocado board, so, caveat emptor, dear buyer — you know, just like with those Avocado Lights.
