Fears of a suspicious package spurred officials to close a busy stretch of Market Street Wednesday afternoon and to send BART trains through a station without stopping.

"Shelter in Place in the Area of Market between 4th and 5th Street due to @SFPD Activity," San Franciasco's Department of emergency Management said in an Alert SF message sent to subscribers. "Stay inside and away from windows. Avoid the area if possible. Muni has been rerouted off Market Street."

The issue, the San Francisco Police Department revealed in a series of tweets, was a "suspicious package" at or near BART's Powell Street Station.

According to the SFMTA, Muni Metro was also disrupted in the area. Inbound trains from West Portal were switching back at Castro back to outbound service. Passengers at the Montgomery and Embarcadero stops were apparently stuck, with trains "holding" as of 2:37 p.m.

The inbound N-Judah was switching back at Church and Duboce, the SFMTA said, and the T Third was "switching back at 4th & Channel."

BART was also disrupted, and as of 2:50 p.m. "Trains are not entering Powell St. at this time as SFPD responds to suspicious package. More updates coming."

As of 3:04 p.m., Powell Station was completely shut down.

Update: The situation was resolved without incident as of 3:39 p.m.
