Just hitting the market is the insane, full-floor penthouse unit sitting atop what will be the tallest residential tower on the West Coast. I'm talking about 181 Fremont, arguably the coolest looking new high-rise going up on SF's rapidly changing skyline (see the full view below), right beside Salesforce Tower. CBS 5 just got an exclusive tour of the model unit and the unfinished penthouse on the 70th floor. The almost 7,000-square-foot unit is listed at $42 million — as we first heard in March — which puts it just under the original list price of that Lumina penthouse in 2015, which was $49 million.

CBS 5 gets none other than Million Dollar Listing-famous Justin Fichelson to discuss the unit, and he says he's expecting the trophy property to be bought by a foreign investor, or perhaps a tech titan who has that kind of cash. (The units are actually being marked by The Mark Company.)*

Fichelson throws some shade in Lumina's direction, because it obviously didn't fetch that price for the penthouse, saying to CBS 5, "We see a lot of new developments put a big price tag on the penthouse and often times it’s just for publicity reasons, most people know it’s never going to fetch the big price tag." This $42 million penthouse will be "the exception," he says/hopes.

As you can see from the jaw-dropping views in the video above, 181 Fremont marks a new chapter for high-rise living in San Francisco, and the developer is making sure everybody knows that unlike Millennium Tower, this one's foundation goes all the way down to bedrock. Kelly DeWees, senior project manager with developer Jay Paul Company, tells CBS 5, "We have drilled all the way to bedrock and we use bracing in an innovative way to tune the building which really means that it keeps it from wind resistance and seismic activity." The building is believed to be able to withstand up to an 8.6M earthquake.

The penthouse, meanwhile, and the 54 other units occupying the upper floors of the tower — the lower floors will be office space, rumored possibly for Facebook — will be move-in ready early next year.
