Watch out, whale watchers! This particular season is being hailed as “some of the best whale watching in history” as record numbers of the mammoth marine mammals are turning up on Northern California’s Pacific coast. But the uptick in whales has also meant an uptick in whale collisions these last two weeks, like the kiteboarder who slammed into a whale, a boat colliding with a whale, and now video of another near-miss in which a whale of a move saves this humpback from becoming beach fodder.

The incident apparently took place this past Saturday, July 8, and was filmed by YouTube user “lauri duke” from above on the Golden Gate Bridge.

We have two versions of the video, the first of which is the silent, quickie 19-second version above. Below we see the full one-minute, seven-second “Director’s Cut” with sound shot by the same videographer.

Oh sure, these whale videos are fun to watch, but any actual collisions are quite deadly for the whales. Broken ribs or spines are often a death sentence for whales, whose bodies shortly thereafter tend to turn up on beaches. And don’t even get me started on the risks posed by crab fishing gear entanglements.

Marine advocates ask that boaters try to maintain at least a hundred yards distance between their vessel and any whales. But do watch the whales while you have a chance. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the whale population tends to clear out of the Bay Area by August.
