A 35-year-old man was arrested Monday, after police say he was behind a fire at a Mission SRO that displaced at least four residents and caused thousands of dollars in damages.

As previously reported, the San Francisco Fire Department was called to 2084 Mission Street at 5:22 a.m. Monday on reports of a fire inside the Frances Hotel, a single room occupancy hotel located between 16th and 17th Streets.

The fire broke out in room 304 of the hotel, the SFFD says, which is on the top floor of the building. Sprinklers in the area deployed, they say, and by 5:31 the fire was under control.

Four were displaced by the incident, the SFFD says, and no injuries were reported. According to Mission Local, the response to the fire caused water damage inside the hotel, as well as "several thousand dollars" in necessary repairs to the business beneath the hotel, which says its merchandise was rendered unsalvageable.

A Frances Hotel manager told Mission Local that the "fire was likely caused by someone living in the room," and officials confirmed Monday morning that the cause of the blaze was still under investigation.

It appears that that investigation bore fruit, as according to the San Francisco Police Department, they say that a male suspect "set fire to [a] mattress and chair" in the hotel, a blaze that spread and "also burned walls."

That man, who police say is 35 years of age, "fled but was arrested later in the day." He has not been publicly identified as of publication time.
