A hapless alleged car thief in San Rafael got caught Sunday standing on the side of a road with a $245,000 Ferrari, reportedly begging passersby for money for gas. As CBS 5 reports, San Rafael police responded to Francisco Boulevard East at Shoreline Parkway where there had been reports of a suspicious man with a very expensive car, "acting strangely" and asking for gas money. Also, according to police Sgt. Lisa Holton, he was appeared to be "pouring gas on the Ferrari."

Police arrested 36-year-old Rocky Jimenez of Georgia after he was unable to answer a series of questions, and after they contacted a local Ferrari dealership and confirmed the car was stolen.

As KRON 4 reports, Jimenez tried to tell police that the car was his but had been in the shop for two years, and he had just picked it up. He allowed police to search it and said he had ownership papers in his backpack. Police found a key to the Ferrari as well as second key to a different Ferrari.

According to Holt, after searching the car, police also found goods stolen in a commercial burglary two days earlier.

If you guessed this might have something to do with drugs, you guessed right!

Jimenez was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance.

This calls to mind the high-profile 2011 theft of Guy Fieri's Lamborghini out of a San Francisco dealership showroom by a Marin County teenager who was trying to impress a girl. He was at least smart enough to drive it straight into a storage unit where authorities didn't locate it for months.
