An officer with the San Francisco Police Department fired shots at a home invasion suspect late Sunday night, but it's not believed that the bullets connected with their target.

According to a statement emailed by the SFPD, officers were called to a residence on the 2100 block of Quesada Avenue on reports of a home invasion at 11 p.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, they "established a perimeter around the premises," but as the uniformed officers went to enter the home "several suspects exited the rear of the building."

At least one of the suspects fired shots at the police, they say. One SFPD officer returned fire, they say.

Following the gunfire, the "suspects fled over fences and through adjacent backyards," police say. Chasing them on foot, officers managed to detain one of the suspects even as the others continued to run.

"A larger perimeter was established and additional resources responded to the scene," including K9 units (aka police dogs), police say, as residents were ordered to shelter in place. The search was concluded by 4:45 a.m, Monday, with police saying that the other suspects remain on the loose.

Police say that it's unknown if any of the suspects were injured during the shoot-out. KRON 4 reports that one of the victims of the home invasion suffered minor injuries, and says that police believe the invaded residence was specifically targeted.

"From what I hear though, it was harrowing," SFPD spokesperson Sgt. Michael Andraychak told NBC Bay Area. "Very, very close call for officers that were in the background."

The single suspect that police nabbed is presently being questioned, and the residents of the invaded home are also being interviewed, according to the SFPD.

As with all police shootings, the SFPD says that separate investigations into the incident are being conducted by the SFPD Homicide Detail and Internal Affairs Division, the SF District Attorney’s Independent Investigations Bureau and the Office of Police Accountability. Anyone with information on the incident or the suspects is asked to call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444, or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
