Though located on San Francisco's "most criminal block," the Westfield Centre shopping mall has long presented itself as a tony oasis in the fraught melee that can be Market Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. But recent reports of a "suspicious" dead body on its premises, as well as a series of violent muggings — another of which just happened last night — suggests that things are just as tough inside the shopping center as they are on the streets outside.

The latest mugging at the mall, at least according to the San Francisco Police Department, went down at 8:22 p.m. Monday. According to the SFPD report, and it began with a 22-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman "in the mall, sitting at a table with their laptops."

Suddenly, a male suspect that police say was aged between 12 and 15 years old allegedly "banged on the rail behind them and drew their attention," as a second similarly aged male stole the woman's laptop and ran off.

The victims gave chase, which appeared to be what a third teen male suspect was counting on — as the male victim looked back at his table, he saw that that kid was now "stealing his laptop and cell phone."

The male victim changed course, and went after the second thief, which is when a fourth teen (also male) punched the man in the face, according to the SFPD.

Joined by a fifth suspect, police say, the group of deplorable teens ran off, two laptops and a cell phone richer. They haven't been seen since, and police say that no arrests have been made in the case.
