We were excited to learn this past May that a forthcoming movie about the storied Winchester Mystery House would star Helen Mirren in the title role. Now, thanks to a CBS Films press release picked up by the Chronicle, we know a bit more about the film. Namely, that it sounds like it's totally going to be a horror flick.

The story will focus on Mirren as Sarah Winchester, the millionaire heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. While there is much debate as to how true to life it is, the commonly told tale is that Sarah had the Santa Clara Valley house under continuous construction as a way to outmaneuver all the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles — spirits, the story goes, that she believed were after her.

By the time work stopped, the unfinished house stood seven-stories tall and had roughly 160 rooms. And now, thanks to the movie, it seems like that ghostly chase through all those rooms is coming to the big screen.

"When skeptical San Francisco psychiatrist Eric Price is dispatched to the estate to evaluate [Winchester's] state of mind, he discovers that her obsession may not be so insane after all," the plot description reads. Which, yeah, that totally sounds like she's going to be chased by a lot of ghosts. "WINCHESTER will take audiences inside the labyrinth like house that is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world."

So, either ghosts or someone trying to drive her mad so he/she can steal Sarah's millions? Either way, sounds scary.

Australian duo Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig are writing and directing, and the film is set to begin shooting in March of next year. You don't have to wait until the movie comes out to get your ghost on, however. The Winchester Mystery House is now a popular San Jose tourist attraction — one that allows visitors to stay overnight (if they dare!).

Oh, also: As a heads up to all you budding actors out there who feel like you've got the "skeptical San Francisco psychiatrist" look down, the role of Price has yet to be cast — and there will likely be some extra work too.
