In addition to rainbow crosswalks and a giant rainbow flag, the Castro will be getting one more reminder that it is the gay neighborhood: rainbow lighting up and down its Muni station escalators.

Yes, they're already being installed, as Hoodline tells us, and this was all part of the escalator replacement project that first came to Church Street station, and has been happening at Castro for the last few months.

SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose issued a statement, saying we'll be seeing these escalators lit up and working in just a couple weeks. "We anticipate turning on the lights in early May," says Rose. "Muni has the honor of running through nearly every San Francisco neighborhood and Castro station is part of the fabric of that community. Whenever we get a chance to play a part in showcasing and honoring San Francisco, its communities and its people, we do what we can."
