Since its initial 1999 publication, "Women," which photographer Annie Leibovitz began as a collaboration with Susan Sontag, has changed a great deal. So has the very subject.

In its latest incarnation, “Women: New Portraits," which was commissioned by the bank UBS and appears in a former hangar at Crissy Field starting Friday amidst international touring, viewers will notice everyone from Sheryl Sandberg to Amy Schumer to Caitlyn Jenner.

“It is such a big undertaking and a broad subject" Liebovitz said in a statement picked up by the Chronicle. "It is like going out and photographing the ocean.” As the Mercury News quotes Liebovitz,"What's happening now... [is women] are presenting themselves with more confidence."

The photographer's Bay Area ties include a Contemporary Vision Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern and degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting and, on a whim, took photography as a night class.

"The photographer doesn't need to add any pizazz to it," says Liebovitz. "They already have a clear sense of who they are."

"Women: New Portraits" will be on display at 649 Old Mason Street at the Presidio's Crissy Field from this Friday, March 25 through Sunday, April 17. Daily hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday extended hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
