Well, the Michelin Guide updates for 2016 just arrived ahead of schedule, and Inside Scoop jumped on the new star listings, which turn out to be a lot more newsworthy than I thought! As I mentioned might be possible last week, Manresa finally got elevated to three-star status this year following the Los Gatos restaurant's recovery from a fire last year. This definitely marks a triumph for acclaimed chef David Kinch, who has been vying for the coveted three stars for several years now.

But in other big news, one of Kinch's many proteges, James Syhabout, gets elevated to two-star status with his Oakland restaurant Commis. Several years back, Commis became the first Oakland restaurant to garner a Michelin star, and now it has the big two as Syhabout's empire has grown to include Hawker Fare and the Dock at Linden Street.

Also elevated to two is Campton Place, and the upscale, reinterpreted Indian flavors of chef Srijith Gopinathan.

But the biggest news perhaps is how many new and semi-new restaurants have garnered their first Michelin stars around town. AL’s Place, Aster, Californios, Lord Stanley, Mourad, Octavia, and Omakase, all newly open in 2015, all earned one star out of the gate — and chef Aaron London of AL's Place appears to have already gotten himself a Michelin "macaron" tattoo, or he always had one in anticipation (see below).

New chef-restaurateurs Val Cantu of Californios and Rupert and Carrrie Blease of Lord Stanley should be especially pleased to see their restaurants get this early recognition from the prestigious guide.

And this is a renewed triumph for Octavia executive chef and owner Melissa Perello, who first earned a star at Frances in 2010 — though the restaurant would go on to be stripped of it two years later.

Also earning one star this year: Kin Khao, which guide director Michael Ellis raved about last year for its authentic Thai flavors; Commonwealth, which gets the honor five years into its run; Nico, which opened in Laurel Heights in late 2013; Lazy Bear, which just opened in late 2014; All Spice, the new SF location in what was formerly Game and Masa's; Rasa, the contemporary Indian spot in Burlingame; Wako, the one-year-old sushi spot in the Richmond; and Sushi Yoshizumi in San Mateo.

And, as happens every year, a couple of spots fall off, and in this case it's a couple of longstanding Bauer-approved French favorites with long histories in town: La Folie and Boulevard. Typically Michelin inspectors make such decisions to strip stars after repeated return visits show the place to fallen off in terms of consistency. Also off the list is 16th Street sushi spot Maruya, which earned a star for the first time in last year's guide the same day that its chefs walked away from the business.
