For some time, there's been discussion of doing what hasn't been done in 45 years — charging pedestrians (and, for that matter, cyclists) to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. In fact, it really looked like we were headed in that direction about this time last year.

But we won't be crossing that bridge after all, as CBS and the AP report that Governor Jerry Brown has now signed AB40, introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Phil Ting, legislation prohibiting transportation agencies from charging sidewalk tolls on the Golden Gate bridge and on four other state-owned bridges in the Bay Area besides.

The iconic bridge, Ting claims, would have been the only solely domestic span in America with a sidewalk toll. Still, it's not clear what the Golden Gate Bridge Highway And Transportation District, which last year was looking at a five-year, $33 million deficit, will do.
