In a town where ice cream flavors tend toward the simple and seasonal, "Pennsyl-tucky," an offering from relative newcomers ShakeDown Ice Cream, skews more toward wacky Ben & Jerry's than Bi-Rite. Williams-Sonoma's blog alerted us to this new, under-the-radar Tenderloin ice cream spot, and I decided to go check it out for myself.

Sure, there are lots of "pure" flavors at ShakeDown too — the coffee, which is a vanilla white but packed with flavor thanks to an extraction method — is just one of many standouts. But if you're feeling adventurous, go for a scoop of Pennsyl-tucky, their crazy concoction of pieces of walnut chocolate chip pie swirled into bourbon ice cream. And like all of ShakeDown's flavors, it's made with Straus Organic cream base.

ShakeDown arrived in February across from a budding crop of foodie establishments like Huxley and Tender. Marketing has been limited, but fans of the casual, graffiti-filled atmosphere cultivated by the team of Amy Pearce, Paul Moore, and Jodell Lund, are growing and getting somewhat fanatical. Take a look at their Yelp page, for example.

Shakes like the Derbie Pie, made with Pennsyl-tucky ice cream, are more sundaes than anything else — chunky and chock full, with the addition of Irish whisky caramel sauce, whipped cream, and St. Benoît Milk for extra creaminess.

Get one while it's still warm out!
