BART service has resumed following an early-morning train fire that caused major delays system-wide.

According to BART spokesperson Jim Allison, the entire system began experiencing "major delays" as of 4:29 a.m. Thursday. That's when a fire was reported on a three-car
train heading from Richmond to Fremont.

"There was a report of a small explosion," on the train, according to ABC7.

"50 passengers were taken off the train. They were later put back on the train in the front cabin and taken to the Fruitvale station, where some were attended to," they say.

"We had to turn off power to the third rail" between the Bay Fair and Lake Merritt Stations, Allison says, and close the Lake Merritt, Fruitvale, Coliseum, and San Leandro Stations.

Service to the Oakland Airport was also a no-go, since it originates at the Coliseum station.

Though Allison initially said that service might not be restored for “a few hours," as crews work to move the disabled train and replace a rail damaged in the fire, BART spokesman Taylor Huckaby says that repairs went more swiftly than expected.

As of 8:50 a.m., BART reports that "all stations are now open on the Fremont Line."

Though "normal service" has resumed, riders should expect residual delays, BART says.
