Transitioning | KQED News from KQED News on Vimeo.

For State of Health, KQED has closely tracked two transgender people — Jamie Nelson, who identifies as a queer transgender male, and Jetta’Mae Carlisle, who identifies as a straight woman — as they transition from their assigned gender to the gender with which they identify.

Trans visibility, yes, aided by Bruce Jenner's coming out, demands more great coverage like this. It's often invoked that people who know gay people are far more likely to be (and vote) in favor of gay rights (and generally not be bigotted trolls). The same is, of course, true with trans people. And here they are.

Nelson and Carlisle give us a very honest look at a process that clearly takes determination and bravery. "For the first time in my life, I think my skin is finally gonna fit," says Carlisle, adding "one of the things i'm looking forward to is getting to go and get pretty underwear."
