38-year-old Uber driver Emerson Decarvalho of Daly City, arrested Sunday for allegedly hitting a bicyclist in Fisherman Wharf on purpose after an altercation, has surrendered his driver;s license, KRON4 reports.
The victim, a 45-year-old cyclist, was biking near the intersection of North Point and Taylor Streets when he allegedly struck the window of Decarvalho's Camry. After a shouting match, Decarvalho allegedly hit the cyclist with his vehicle intentionally, knocking him unconscious, puncturing his lung, and breaking his ribs and collar bone. The cyclist was then taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not considered life threatening.
Decarvalho is Brazilian national and has been a U.S. resident since 2003. In 2009, he was granted asylum and a U.S. green card. At the scene, he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and booked into jail, then released after he posted $75,000 bail.
Yesterday at his bail hearing, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Daniel Flores gave Decarvalho an option to either have bail set at around $250,000 or surrender his drivers license and agree to not operate any motorized vehicles. Also required was attendance at a supervised weekly pretrial release program.
He handed over his license voluntarily.
Uber responded very, very quickly to SFist with the following statement about the incident after it was reported on Monday.
“Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible incident. We are gathering more information, have reached out to the San Francisco Police Department and will assist their investigation however we can.”
