A fire truck crashed into a bicyclist early Saturday morning near the Civic Center, seriously injuring the bike rider.

The crash occurred at Mason and Turk Streets at 2:12 a.m. as the truck was returning to Fire Station No. 1 at Folsom and Fifth Streets. It was heading southbound on Mason while the cyclist was heading westbound on Turk. Because the truck was returning to its station, its sirens and flashing lights were not on, according to the Chronicle.

The bicyclist, only described as a male in his 30s, was taken to SF General with "pretty serious head injuries." He underwent surgery and was last reported to be recovering.

"However you look at it, it's tragic. Our thoughts are with the injured bicyclist and his family, as well as with the members that were on Engine 1," said Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White.
