The driver of one of those tourist-transporting "cable cars" on wheels fatally struck a female pedestrian near San Francisco's City Hall this morning, a police spokesperson said.

A 60-year-old woman identified as a staffer with the City Controller's Office was struck by the driver of a Classic Cable Car Charters vehicle at 11:30 this morning while in the crosswalk just outside City Hall's Polk Street entrance, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Albie Esparza says.

According to SFPD Commander Mikail Ali, the driver wasn't paying attention to the road in the moments leading up to the crash, KCBS reports.

“Probably there was some level of distraction from what was taking place in the roadway in front of the vehicle,” Ali said.

According to KCBS, the woman "was dragged beneath the coach and run over by both the front and back tires of the vehicle." She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with critical injuries, and died in surgery.

By 2:59 p.m. today, Cable Car Charters had released the following statement: "Classic Cable Car Charters is currently investigating an accident with a pedestrian that occurred earlier this afternoon near City Hall. Our thoughts and prayers are with the pedestrian and her family. We have no other information at this time."

However, SFPD has more information to share, as Ali said an investigation is underfoot "to determine to what extent the distraction was in play," in an effort to determine if the driver should face criminal charges.
