RIP, Joan. You were the most biting of all biting comedians, and as the New York Times put it in their just-published obit, you "evolved from a sassy, self-deprecating performer early in [your] career into a coarser assassin, slashing at celebrities and others with a rapier wit that some critics called comic genius in the bloodletting vein of Lenny Bruce."

Also, even at 81, it feels like you were taken from us too soon, and you were still at the top of your game.

This great clip from Season 2 of Louis, in 2012, begins with Joan waxing sincere about being a comedian. "It sounds so stupid," she says in the scene. "But what we do is a calling, my dear. We make people happy. It's a calling." Then Louis makes the moves on her, because he just can't stop himself.

And below, a bonus: Joan speaking after a screening of the documentary about her, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, at the Castro Theater in 2010, during the San Francisco International Film Festival.
