Urban explorer and Bay Area photographer Troy Paiva shot the former Chronicle printing facility in Union City (1550 Pacific Street) over the course of two nights in May, and the result is a stirring and surreal document of the industrial building's past and present.

The Chronicle ceased its in-house printing in 2009, in a measure to cut costs, and the plant has been vacant since. As the Chron reported, more than 200 pressmen lost their jobs — a position that started back in 1865 when the newspaper was founded as the Daily Dramatic Chronicle.

Now, as Paiva writes on his blog Lost America, the facility is just a "big empty warehouse" with a "little soul" left from its glory days.

Paiva specializes in light painted, night photography, and for this shoot, he used a fisheye lens, which adds a ghostly feel to this forgotten place.
