The Bay Area doesn't do food like the rest of America, so why should its new football stadium be any different?
On Wednesday, chefs revealed a first look at the menu that'll be available at the San Francisco 49ers' new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara—which has its ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 17—and it’s as extravagant as the project’s $1.3 billion price tag. But unlike the cost of the stadium, we still have no idea how much these culinary delights will set you back.
Here's what we do know, based on various reports from the media preview:
- There will be 33 fixed concessions stands and 64 portable concessions.
- 78% of all food suppliers will be sourced within 150 miles.
- Led by chef Ryan Stone and managed by Centerplate, the food preparation will be done on-site with final meals cooked at the concession stands to maintain freshness.
- A smartphone app will enable pick-up orders and in-seat delivery (for a charge).
- It will have the most vegan and vegetarian items of any NFL stadium, with at least one vegan item at every concession stand, but no tofu in any of its 32 total options. Vegan hot dogs will come from Field Roast and other items include portobello mushrooms on a steamed bun and a barbecue jackfruit sandwich.
- The hot dogs will be called "frankfurters." They contain antibiotic-free, hormone-free meat with a natural casing, will be smoked, and served on a Le Boulanger bun.
- Franks, grass-fed beef burgers, and garlic fries will be staples throughout the stadium.
- More fancy fare includes wood-fired pizzas, rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese, a prosciutto and bocconcini ciabatta panini, an oyster pan roast, lemon bars, and red velvet cupcakes.
- International fare includes Indian curries and Asian steamed buns.
- Condiments will be “sundried” and “housemade.”
- Beers include Budweiser, Bud Light, Anchor Steam, Stone Brewery, North Coast, 21st Amendment, Hoegaarden, Boddington's, Speakeasy, Anderson Valley, plus many more craft brews. There will be 15 different wine options.
In addition to the concession array, chef-restaurateur Michael Mina is opening an iteration of his Bourbon Steak chain, Bourbon Steak & Pub, at the stadium. That will open in August, as Inside Scoop earlier reported. Mina will also offer a $5,000-a-season VIP tailgate package.
It could be perfect or far too precious, but we'll find out soon enough. The first 49ers, preseason game at Levi's Stadium will be on August 17 against the Denver Broncos.
