The Great Horror Campout, a "high scare, high startle content experience" that's traveling the country this summer, is coming to the Alameda County Fairgrounds July 11 and 12. And it sounds kind of awesome in a cheesy-horror sort of way. It's an overnight, 12-hour camp experience whose launch was funded in part by Mark Cuban, and it puts participants through a series of scares and encounters with "scareactors" and "a plethora of species that were only thought to have existed in legend."

It sounds like a cross between a Halloween fun house and a scavenger hunt, and the ticket price of $139 includes a buffet dinner and continental breakfast, as well as accommodations in a 4-person tent (it's $203 for a 2-person tent). And it's likely that only nerds will be doing any sleeping, however, and unless you opt to camp in the "Chicken Zone" you'll be harassed throughout the night. Also, Chicken Zoners and wallflowers can opt to just sit and watch horror movies all night, which seems like a grand waste of $139.

Sidenote: Though this sounds like an event geared toward teenagers, and it likely will attract a lot of people in the 18-22 range, you have to be at least 18 to take part. And there's no alcohol allowed.

Campers participating in the Hell Hunt will be on a horror-laced scavenger hunt hunting for SCAG (Shit All Campers Get), and trying to win a badge as Hellmaster — which seems to allow you some place of honor should you want to go to another campout in another city. And generally, I guess, Hellmasters have bragging rights among other horror obsessives.

Hopefully, no one will choose this as an opportunity to try mushrooms for the first time.
