A search for Vernon "Cody" Matthews has entered its fourth day, following the UC Berkeley student/rapper's disappearance during a hiking trip.

According to El Dorado County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Lt. Tim Becker, Matthews, age 23, was dropped off for a solo hiking trip at his family's cabin in the Ice House area of the east-central California county on Wednesday, June 4. Matthews last spoke with his mother on Friday, June 6. On Saturday night, Matthews' parents contacted the dispatch center for the Sheriff's department, saying that they had not heard from him since.

All of Matthews' belongings remain in the cabin, and his cell phone hasn't been used since Friday, Becker says. There are no indications of foul play.

Becker says Matthews knows the area very well and is an avid hiker and climber

Matthews is 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 160 to 220 pounds, has shoulder-length strawberry blond hair and a full red beard. Becker says that it's not known what Matthews was wearing when he set out.

According to his Facebook page, Matthews is an archaeology major at UC Berkeley, and is listed as an officer in the school's Anthropology Undergraduate Association. He also performs as rapper MC Thor (you can listen to him on Soundcloud, here), due, perhaps, to his resemblance to the Marvel character.

According to Becker, "all available resources" have been used since Saturday night in an effort to find Matthews, including search and rescue teams from Placer, Nevada, Sacramento and Douglas Counties, as well as canine units, horse mounted units, off road vehicle units, ground units, and CHP aircraft.

Anyone who might have information on Matthews' whereabouts is urged to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s dispatch center at 530-621-6600.
