A planned, large-scale grocery store at 555 Fulton Street (between Laguna and Octavia) is going before the Board of Supervisors tonight to possibly receive an exception to the neighborhood's ban on formula retail. There's a proposal to create a special-use district for this grocery store, something the area pretty desperately needs, and which is likely to get public support regardless of our town's noted distaste for chains.

We talked about the development a few months back, and it's a five-story, 139-unit condo project designed (in part) by celebrated local architect Stanley Saitowitz, though there seems to have been some change of architect midway through development.

The Fulton Street Grocery Store Special Use District, as Curbed reports, would allow a chain grocer like, say, Trader Joe's or Whole Foods to move in — but we're guessing they're aiming for TJ's, or a smaller gourmet brand, given that there are now two Whole Foods locations not far from there, in Russian Hill and in the Castro, both of which opened in the last year.
