As is our monthly tradition around here, we now present our favorite utterances from the May issue of San Francisco's "most exclusive news magazine". Provided (mostly) without commentary and in no particular order. This month's themes: Your Mom. Observe:

  • "Also celebrating in May, mothers from different cultural backgrounds and upbringings have gathered to give us their thoughts about the basic instinct of nurturing." - Lois Lehrman giving us this month's theme in her Letter from the Publisher.

  • “I taught my daughter to be strong, independent, and to live with the highest grade of integrity, because that’s more important than possessions. But you’d never know it when we go shopping.” - Nob Hill Mom Pamala Deikel, quoted in Erika Mailman's "Magnificent Moms" piece.

  • "This might sound awful, but babies have a lot in common with dogs in training during the first few years." - Self-proclaimed "German Shepherd Mom" Elinor Diamond, also in the "Magnificent Moms" piece.

  • "Going from the kitchen to Congress provided me with a unique perspective on the issues affecting our families and communities" - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on her experience as a mother.

  • "When Margaret had her own children, her approach was similar to her parents’ style—at least during their grade school years. Later, the children attended elite boarding schools where discipline went out the window." - Yet another priceless quote from that piece on "Magnificent Moms".

  • "Carmakers strive to create good images for their brand names. One of the most successful is BMW." - Martin Swig's monthly Wheels column.

  • "First, we mentally roast our plump chicken, pull it out of the oven, and let it sit. It’s the best roast chicken we can remember. It’s bursting with delicious flavors and—you won’t have to clean the roasting pan!" - Ed Schwartz' Wine Wisdom column, which he devotes to entirely to imaginary food this month.

  • "Pajamas are going rogue, turning up in the most unlikely places: on the runway, at art openings, and, more and more frequently, at your local coffee house and corner store." - Jennifer Raiser's fashion report on pajamas.

  • "For instance, Louis Vuitton makes a $1,200 pair of leopard print silk pajamas for wear around town for that slouchy, nonchalant 'I have $1,200 to splurge, and I’m more comfortable than you are' statement." - Jennifer Raiser, still on the pajama beat.

  • Regarding Social Media rules for the SF Symphony's tony Black and White Ball, largely regarded as the gala of the year: "Follow Black and White Betty on the BWB Twitter feed #bwball to get the latest scoop, or visit sfsymphony.org/ball."
