We've been keeping an eye on Cervecería de MateVeza ever since the (naturally) caffeinated micro-brewery popped up on our radar last year. Now, with a beer list boasting nearly 100 different bottles and growlers of fresh brews to go, the tiny brewpub at 18th and Church is set to open this Saturday just in time for a big weekend of afternoon drinking in Dolores Park.

The new space, led by MateVeza brewmaster and founder Jim Woods, focuses on the company's own specialty beers brewed with yerba maté. Because they're naturally caffeinated, they safely skirt around Jerry's Brown's prohibition on caffeinated beer and offer a little extra pick-me-up to go with the beer buzz. But don't expect the Dolores Park set, still reeling from the loss of their precious Four Loko, to swarm the 20-seat spot looking for cheap, sugary thrills. Beertender Matt Coelho has stocked his beer fridge with selections that will attract the picnicking types whose weapon of choice comes in big, cork-topped bottles from Belgium. Most of the bottles will be available to-go, but the cheapest six pack at the moment is Lost Coast's Great White, which will run you about seven or eight bucks.

Tecate tall boys won't be showing up here. (And that's fine really, we love a tall can of Mexico's most mediocre export as much as the next guy, but let's be honest — there are a million places in the neighborhood to pick up cheap tall cans. Like the 7-Eleven down the street.) After attending one of MateVeza's beer + brunch Beerunch events earlier this year, we can safely say a Yerba Mate IPA makes a much better breakfast beer anyhow.

As for the drafts, there are seven on tap: three from MateVeza and a rotating selection of other local craft beers from the likes of Magnolia, Marin Brewing Company and Moonlight Brewing. Topping off the craft-beer focus, Woods will be brewing fresh 20-gallon batches in the in-house copper kettles and the small batch products will be available to take home (or yes, to the park, although that's still technically illegal. Ahem.)

In addition to the beers, Cervecería will be serving up savory pastries from El Porteño, whose empenadas have been a hit at Off the Grid and the Ferry Building. For the beer-averse, we're told there will be a couple Argentinian wine options available as well.

Expect bottles to start flying out the doors this Saturday, April 7th, with a slight chance of a soft opening this Friday.
