An unfortunate series of events, including the police impounding a man's car last night for a speeding violation, led to the death of another man by the side of a road near Oakland Airport early this morning. The man was struck by car along a remote, unlit stretch of Doolittle Drive around 6 a.m. while he was trying to walk home from San Leandro with three friends.

Friend and witness Donnell Roberts says his car was impounded last night by Alameda County police, and without a car, he and his best friend of 20 years, along with two female friends, decided to make the long walk back home on foot. The group had gotten ahead of the victim around 6 a.m. when the accident occurred, via a car that approached from behind them. The victim, who has not been named, was thrown a significant distance into a ditch, and died at the scene.
