Activists Turn Bank Of America ATMs Into 'Truth Machines' Overnight

Local rapscallions from the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) turned Bank of America ATMs into temporary political machines of activism overnight. Using non-adhesive stickers designed to look like BoA's ATM screens. In lieu of offering customers checking, savings, deposit, or withdraw options, the new menus "offered a list of everything BoA customers' money is being used for, including investment in coal-fired power plants, foreclosure on Americans' homes, bankrolling of climate change, and paying for fat executive bonuses."

Pretty sneaky, sis. RAN managed to hit 85 Bank of America ATMs in San Francisco last night. Here's a map of all the ATMs.

It's all part of RAN's new Tumblr, BankruptingAmerica.tumblr.com, which, it seems, will "track all the ways BoA is bankrupting America, hence the name." If you want to leave Bank of America — which is your call; we don't bank with them, so we don't care one way or another — SFist conducted a poll in November 2011 to see which credit union readers preferred. How are we going to stop Iran from developing this deadly sticker-applying technology?? With that kind of weapon, they could wipe Israel off the map!!! (by covering it up with a sticker)
  • Superabound
I mean MY GOD. What kind of craven, pussified coward do you have to be to think APPLYING A NON-ADHESIVE DECAL is too far to go in the defense of American Freedom? You might as well go ahead and cut off your balls right now, theyre just dead weight. Ask your doctor about Low-T

  • Superabound
Werent all those Patriots who dumped British tea into the Boston Harbor committing vandalism? Yes, they were. So shut the hell up you Redcoat-appeasing, anti-American, cowardly little tattletails. Dont say a damn word about vandalism. This country was FOUNDED on vandalism!

If we were in Nazi Germany right now, youd be bitching about the people "vandalizing" all the swastikas and Nazi flags. How despicable you are. Cowards. Suck ups. Goody-two-shoes, nerds, mamma's boys. Go complain to the hall monitor why dont you.
  • Yet another "activist" doing something childish without any plan of resolution.

And they are defacing property that is not theirs.  Would it be OK if I put a giant sticker over your entire house?  Nope.

Lose the hippy attitude... we get it, you're all unhappy... what the hell do you want everybody else to do about it?  What do you want the corporations to do about it?  It's not as easy as just pressing a button and everything magically works out.

Is like a bunch of children just seeking attention.

At least they are doing something, taking ACTION-- no matter how small--and not simply writing inane comments in message boards, name calling and using absurd generalizations. Change starts with one person, but most, like yourself, are too comfortable in their rut, throwing their hands in the air, and doing nothing.
Comparing a house to a bank? Really? LOL
The only childish thing here is your comment.
  • completely pointless.  1 person would see this, remove it to use the atm, and it would be disposed of.
  • Fantastic..... Now move your money to a credit union... do it now!!
By the way, this is not vandalism, this is patriotic civil disobediance, of the highest American ideal, against the crimes of the olagarcy.
  • Climate change? Climate schmimate. When will these people realize there's no anthropogenic climate change from greenhouse gases and that it's a con by the very banks they claim to oppose? When hell freezes over from global warming-I mean climate change.
  • deekoo
Basic physics indicates that raising the atmospheric CO2 levels will raise the temperature of the Earth.  Observations indicate that the temperature of the earth is rising and that humans are contributing CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) to the atmosphere.  Calculations indicate that the amount of warming observed is consistent with the amount of CO2 contributed by humans.

While several investors would like to have carbon trading markets to play games in, the fact that they want carbon trading markets doesn't disprove anthropogenic global warming any more than the existance of fake cancer cures proves that cancer itself is a hoax.

To anyone who says this is vandalizing, a crime, think about all the atrocities those banks have committed, aren't those crimes? What are the people supposed to do, in your opinion, shut up and do nothing, remain idle, and stay locked up in an invisible prison? not fighting, not standing up for oneself, for justice, simply because one might be committing a crime? Everything is a bloody crime nowadays! Even the smallest action against injustice is a crime. My god! It's amazing how people control each other, no need for whips, no need for those in power to even have thought police, they have done a great job brainwashing the masses to monitor each other with PC BS,,,

What about all the TARP money that was paid back with interest?
  • David Mowers - thanks for the best and most impactful reply I've seen in a long time.  Taking away all of the complexity of the financial instruments that our greedy 1% shove into our economy for their own personal gain, it boils down one simple concept.  If all the money is at the top, who's going to buy the stuff that make the economy work that ends up supporting the top 1%?  An economy run this way is doomed to fail no matter what it's called.

Your list makes it clear exactly where all of the money is going without any BS. If people can't see the problem, then they deserve what they get.

Bank of America is Vandalizing the USA.
    Wake UP.
  • Sam T
So true! At Chicago's Navy Pier someone wrote under all of the Bank of America signs, "They don't pay their taxes! Do you???" I was so happy to see someone making some noise! I wish someone would do that to all of their ATMs nation wide! It is NOT OK what they are doing to our country.
  • yes, it is Vandalizing

  • Not Sure
And you are a Spam Advertising Shill.
But now for something ON-topic and relevant:
BoA needs to be dismembered branch by branch. Show your local movers and shakers why they have to stop using them, and the power shift will work it's way up.
Larger cities are more difficult, so get together with neighbors and buy (or temporarily borrow) Ad space to let more people know. Like these guys did. First we starve them of resources.
Then we take our country back from these filth.
  • It is vandalizing.

New York State Vandalism Laws. Vandalism is the the willful destruction or defacing of property.Since 'defacement' includes "placing stickers or decals of any sort," it is, under NY law, 'vandalism.'However, there is a longstanding principle in Anglo-Saxon law which permits the violation of lessor laws to fight those breaking greater laws.Since it is undeniable that the actions of BOC (and others) have caused far greater harm, and indeed broken much higher laws than the vandalism charge, the lessor offense should be overlooked for the good of society.(Always remembering that merely because a 'law' has been put in  place by the government, is insufficient to make the 'law' a legal law--it must also conform to the Constitution(s.)  Thus, just because it looks like a law, smells like a law and is enforced as a law--is irrelevant in regards to it actually BEING a law. As is it's popularity.)

What does Bank of America have to do with the rainforest?

Also I wonder if RAN will take my BoA credit card on their donation page?
  • pchazzz
Vandalizing private property.  Way to go, RAN.  I'll be sure not to send any donations your way.
  • Placing removable stickers is vandalizing someone's property now?

Enjoy your wonderful Nazis Kingdom Chaz.
  • pchazzz
Enjoy your horrible Marxist-Leninist kingdom, Dave. Oh and what's your address? I want to stop by and put some removable stickers on your livingroom windows.
  • Seriously? Putting some stickers on an ATM is Marxist-Leninist? Wowsers! off da wall!
  • [insert joke involving Juche, Kim Jong il, DPRK work camps, and that Party Rock Anthem North Korea video here]
  • I wouldn't call this vandalization, seeing as they were non-adhesive stickers. You could probably take them off faster than you put them on. Would you have donated to them anyway?
  • pchazzz
Quite possibly.  I donate to a number of charities.
  • Grand. But...vandalization?
  • pchazzz
Defacement if you prefer. I don't think it was an effective protest. If the stickers are easily removed, the first ATM user will be mildly inconvenienced, remove the sticker and the message.
  • Charles Barnard
It's no more defacement than continuing to operate Ohio Valley Coal-Fired Power Plants despite irrefutable  proof that they cause major air pollution problems in at least one National Park--automatically permitting them to be closed down without notice, is reasonable. In most jurisdictions, defacement must be permanent to qualify.

And, of course, Americans by tradition are more interested in what is correct than with what any government says is legal.

Just because it's legal don't make it right--just because it's illegal don't make it wrong.

It's 'legal' for the government to wisk you away in the night, never to be seen nor heard from again. Do you really think it's right?
  • Darn, I thought they hacked the ATMs to display this. Oh well, this is droll, also.
