Many of you are probably intimately familiar with the Grubstake at Pine and Polk, which serves burgers to the drunken masses every night until 4 a.m. Well, long before Polk Street became the aging frat-boy/sorority girl haven it is today, that strip was home to a lot of gay men, and hustlers, and transsexuals, and tranny prostitutes, and many other marvelous and sundry folk. Today's song of the day pays tribute to those days, and to the Grubstake. It's titled "The Golden Age of Hustlers," and it was written some years ago by still-kickin Tenderloin denizen Bambi Lake, who was once a Cockette, back in the day. It's performed here by the great Justin Vivian Bond.

As a special bonus, we give you this much newer song, "Grubstake," by the group Hail Mary Mallon (composed of solo artists Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz), which comes to us courtesy of The Feast. You can purchase this song here.
