Analyzing Campaign Videos: David Chiu's 'Cityball'

In their latest move to win the hearts and minds of San Franciscans with mild pop culture references (See also: Chiubacca), Team Chiu has put together a trailer for "Cityball". Which is a fictitious movie that is exactly like Moneyball except not in Oakland and not about baseball. (And not starring Brad Pitt.)

Swapping out the MLB boys club for San Francisco government works surprisingly well here, actually. Especially because Chiu's writing team didn't even need to touch the Sorkin script to fit the new subject matter. ("We need to do better with the money we have!")

Sadly, the whole thing still ends with a soup of campaign buzzwords and not a single chair is thrown a Supervisor's meeting.

Unless you either have a candidate who is truly funny and telegenic, along with writers who understand that by its very nature, satire cannot be done by those in power and instead go for some mildly self deprecating humor that makes a point, this kind of thing needs to be avoided. It's almost as painful as that Sopranos-like video the Clintons made. but hey, 20 days left and the campaign lies end, and the lies at City Hall continue.

Gawd this is awful. How much money did they spend on this?  In ALL seriousness, if green-lighting this video project is any indication of the decisions Chiu would make as mayor, we should all be thankful he's polling at about 3% right now.

A bit painful to watch, like an SNL parody on YouTube.
  • I just VORPed in my mouth a little bit.
