Noted hothead actor Russell Crowe came out against circumcision via Twitter on Thursday. It all started, according to the Daily Mail, with a question from a pregnant follower, who asked the actor if he thought she should have her future baby boy circumcised. When Picknic11 asked: 'Do you think I should get him circumstanced?', Crowe lost it. Behold:
Here's a life rule, if you can't spell it, don't do it. Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect.I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats, but stop cutting your babies.
I will always stand for the perfection of babies. I will always believe in God, not man's interpretation of what God requires. Last of it, if you feel it is your right to cut things off your babies please unfollow and fuck off; I'll take attentive parenting over barbarism.
"I will always stand for the perfection of babies" is a fantastic quote, folks. No idea what it means, exactly, but there you have it. Anyway, after making his stance clear, Picknick11 went on to call the temperamental actor "so wise."
In the light of the morning, however, the Oscar-winning actor apologized for offending his pro-circumcision fans, saying:
I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities. I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress. My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry.
One noted personality who has yet to apologize for her rant on circumcision is the Chronicle's Debra Saunders. What a doozy. In addition to likening the anti-circumcision movement with anti-Semitism (scores of Jews don't circumcise their babies, Debbie), the self-consciously conservative columnist magically blames the supervisors for the ballot measure, while blathering on about the risks of urinary tract infection and sexually-transmitted diseases. Odd. Not to mention inaccurate.
Side note: Yes, we understand that circumcision isn't as harrowing as female genital mutilation (FGM), the act of removing the clitoris. Uttering the two totally different practices in the same sentence borders on misogyny. Obviously. Clearly. Contrary to what Saunders wants you to believe, however, no one honestly thinks that the two are comparable -- even though, quite literally, both acts involve the mutilation of the genital area. In fact, ladies, penis circumcision has nothing to do with you. Deep breaths.
Anti-circumcision activists garnered well over the 7,168 signatures needed to get a ban on circumcision on the November ballot in San Francisco. The important issue has since received nationwide media attention who refuse to stop with the terrible penis puns.
