Michelle Obama and Alice Waters Host Fundraiser for Obama Reelection

aliceloves thyme.jpg

In an effort to help raise funds for Barack Obama reelection campaign -- which: let's face it, he's a shoo-in for four more years -- First Lady Michelle Obama and delicate-masher-of-garlic-so-as-not-to-bruise-the-clove's-oil maven, Alice Waters, will help host at least two breakfast fundraisers on June 14. Berkeleyside notes: "Tickets to see the First Lady range from $1,000 for general seating at the Claremont to $5,000 for the photo reception to $25,000 to be a 'co-host.' "

Waters and Obama, if you recall, have loads in common. The Chez Panisse founder once wrote a letter to the White House, urging the Obamas to select a chef who would make health and environmentalism a top priority. And, just last week, Michelle helped introduce the new USDA food plate, which champions healthier (not to mention tastier!) eating.

I can't tell if you're joking or not about Obama's reelection being a sure thing.  It's definitely not.  It's dependent on the state of the economic recovery over the next 17 months and whether the republicans choose a candidate who's certifiably insane.  Obama's currently given 60% odds by the betting markets at intrade, but there are far too many unknowns to predict with any confidence.

Meanwhile, the republicans seem to be pretty gleefully playing the game of making sure Obama can't do a single thing to improve the nation's economy before the election.

It doesn't matter about the economy. It doesn't matter what the Rethuglicans say or do. Obama is a lock because of the hispanic demographic bulge that will be just beginning to emerge in 2012. You can't argue with the numbers.
  • Hispanic voters have voted Republican in the past.  It's unlikely this time with the anti-immigrant sentiment on the right, but I wouldn't count on that block necessarily being 100% in favor of Obama either.
  • fizzandpop
No, but they sure as hell are not a massive pool of undecideds. People have long memories and the Republican brand is a toxic mix of Grand Old Party of Rich White Men Who Want To Foreclose On My House, protestant stuff we don't understand, The People Who Leave Racist Flyers in Bad Spanish, or Crazy Fat People Who Never Even Bother to Campaign On Spanish Language TV. Throw in the 100% white Tea Party and it's not looking good.
  • But remember, Democrats are a bunch of baby-killing, Satan-worshiping atheists who have pre-marital sex using condoms.  While that might sound like a great time to you or me, many self-hating Catholics have a problem with this.

Word. But hispanics, unlike shit-ignorant crackers, rarely vote religious dogma over self interest.
  • I don't know about that -- they voted for Bush.

    > You can't argue with the numbers.

This is true.  However, you can make it very hard for them to vote - which they will. Voter intimidation - it's the new poll tax.

Identifying yourself as the person you claim to be in order to place a vote doesn’t sound “very hard,” or “intimidating.” Shoot, I pulled out my ID when I bought a pack of gum with my credit card and at no time was it “very hard,” or “intimidating.”

Just like how educated and literate African Americans had absolutely no problems passing the Southern literacy tests.

And I just wanted to note here another instance of M.L. supporting an expansion of the regulatory power of "big government."
  • Miles_Long
I’m not advocating the expansion of anything. I’m advocating a practical change in existing policy.
  • CptSludge
I think requiring everybody who wants to vote to "carry papers" and enlisting a cadre of petty-bureaucrats to enforce that provision falls squarely on the "expanding government" side of things.

You can argue for it, but realize that you're arguing for a "right wing" position, not a "small government" position.
  • Miles_Long
Is the Nazi reference really necessary?

Asking the existing cadre of petty bureaucrats that check the names on the registration to also verify that you are the person you say you are with an ID isn't some sort of great expansion of govt, it's a change in existing policy with existing resources.
  • CptSludge
Nazis? Seriously? You got Nazis from my response?

    Wow....

    NO SOUP FOR YOU!
  • fizzandpop
I fucking hate people who pay for anything under $500 with a fucking credit card. But we already knew that.
  • hillarys_new_shoes
Was there only one store selling gum in your district?
Was the line incredibly long when this lone store opened?
Did the cash register and the credit card machine both malfunction immediately causing long delays?
Did everyone start leaving the line because it was going nowhere and they had to go to work?

No, Miles - I'm not surprised that you've never had a problem purchasing gum or voting. Congrats.
  • SquarePegSF
As always, you are right on the money.
  • Too bad it's not Michelle Obama and Gordon Ramsay, that would have been a lot more interesting.

"Donate money, you *BLEEEP* donkey dicks!"
  • fizzandpop
He's the only man on TV who rhymes restaurant with c**t.
  • Miles_Long
I hope code pink will raise enough money to co-host. I want to see another foaming at the mouth sing-a-long
  • CptSludge
We agree! I'd much rather their money be spent on re-electing Obama than on whatever other inane cause they'd otherwise be supporting.
