This Weekend: Listen to These People at SF Zine Fest

Although SF Zine Fest is all about tables and tables of choice zines, comics, phenomenal DIY doodads, and more -- psst, be sure to read Laura Beck's article on making her very first zine -- it's also a great opportunity to learn from a bevvy of successful independent publishers and local scribes. This year's workshop and panel roster promises to have something for every zine geek, and then some. Behold.

2010 Workshops & Panels - Saturday:

Q + A with Artnoose
• 12:30 - 1:20
An interview/presentation with Special Guest Artnoose. A slide show of her work and an audience Q + A will be included.

No, You Do It: Spotlight on Jesse Reklaw
• 1:30 - 2:20
Special Guest Jesse Reklaw unveils his new publishing ethos of NYDI: "No, You Do It." Chronicling 20 years of experience with publishing, from photocopied zines to hardback books by "real" publishers, Jesse shares what he learned along the way about the business and theory of publishing; working with editors, distributors, and agents; new formats like websites, e-books, and print-on-demand; as well as the history of publishing and some thoughts about its future. Audience Q+A to follow.

Punk Tabloid Panel
• 2:30 - 3:20
In conjunction with the SFZF's first-ever art exhibition, the panel for "Punk Tabloid" will feature creators V. Vale (Search & Destroy) and John Gullak (Another Room Magazine). Moderated by Matt Wobensmith of Goteblüd, this panel discussion will focus on the history of these late 70s Bay Area large format zines, as well as the environment and process that produced them.

DIY Screenprinting • 3:30 - 4:45 Always a Zine Fest favorite! Learn the basics of screenprinting in this hands-on workshop. Discussion will include printing, screen construction, screen mesh, squeegee hardness, types of ink, emulsion coating and removal, and exposure of positive image. Students will also get the chance to pull prints from screens with pre-burned designs (bring clothes, paper, or any flat surface you would like the screenprint onto)! All inks, squeegees, and screens will be provided. - Lords of Print

Bookbinding: Basics & Beyond

Ready to take your zines beyond the staple? Would you like to learn how to create blank journals or other small books? We will cover a variety of useful bookbinding techniques, including single-sheet folded books, single & double signature pamphlet stitch, stab binding, and more. Something for all skill levels! Materials included.

DIY and Small-Press Journalism

Small press journalism -- you know, like, on paper -- is enjoying a bit of a renaissance in the Bay Area as of late. Come hear this star-studded panel discuss the trials and tribulations (and the rewards!) of the small press as old media meets new. Bring your tough questions and notepads. Our all-star panelists include Susie Cagle (journalist, cartoonist, critic about town), Michael Stoll (founder, SF Public Press), Dan Archer (reportage cartoonist and Knight fellow at Stanford), Josh Wilson (proprietor, Independent Arts + Media), Antonio Roman-Alcala (founder, SF Arts + Politics zine), and Mat Honan (Longshot Mag).

Zines on Toast
• 4:00 - 4:50
The Zines on Toast reading tour is stopping at the SF Zine Fest with a combination reading and panel! Join UK creators Isy Morgenmuffel, Edd Baldry, Steve Larder, Tom Fiction, Natalie Last Hours as they recount tales of the London Zine Symposium, failing to punch Tony Blair, ideas for radical health, creating a UK social centre, bike punks, regional dialects and more, as well as a discussion of UK zine culture in general. Audience Q+A to follow.
