At this weekend's state Democratic Party Convention -- an event wonks like to think of as wildly important -- Mayor Gavin Newsom failed to snatch the party's official endorsement for lieutenant governor. Then again, neither did his opponent, Janice Hahn. SF Weekly's Joe Eskenazi reports: "Newsom picked up 52 percent of delegates' votes, easily outpacing opponent Janice Hahn's 42.6 percent -- but falling short of the 60 percent threshold for winning party endorsement."

Newsom and Hahn would have needed the required 60 percent of votes to win the coveted Dem endorsement for lieutenant governor. Mayor Newsom, many argue, has been trying to get the hell out of San Francisco politics and into higher office ever since he took office. This could be his final shot.

By all accounts, the convention was an aggressive snooze-fest to the average person, lacking the vitriol and "excitement the Tea Party is building for conservative candidates."
