Scene from a Holiday Shoplifter in Handcuffs

scenefromaholidayshoppindarrest.jpg

While shooting in Union Square the other day, local photographer Henry Navarro came across this arresting scene. He describes it:

I was taking photos on this corner and these three come barreling out of the Saks Fifth Avenue door practically knocking me over. Needless to say, I kept on taking photos. What?!? I'm a photographer... it's what I do:) The culprit looked up at me and said, "I'm going to jail". I lowered my camera and said, "Duh!"

First Bobby Brown goes on a stabbing spree on MUNI and now Whitney is caught shoplifting at Saks???

p.s.
Loving the boots on security gal...nice!

should go to jail for looking like such a dipshit

My iPhone was stolen last Tuesday (15th) by two hispanic kids on the corner of 24th and San Jose in plain heavy traffic around 6:30 pm. This isn't the first time I lose a phone in this way, and it is bullshit so I hope all these muggers get what's coming to them.

There's a unique ID of every phone. I believe iTunes saves it for you.

Theoretically, AT&T can lock out this internal number from entering their network again. Not sure if they will, but it's worth asking.

ninja,

you should tell att/apple if they don't locate your stolen phone for you, you'll sue them. they can do it with the built in software and unique id's. they just don't want to. we pay way more money to these fuckers then they deserve. it's about time they tried to be helpful when we need it without paying an extra 110/year for mobile me. rip off!

You pay $110 for Mobile Me and you haven't figured out that location thing you're all OMG CONSPIRACY about is one of its features?

Wow.

He clearly says that he thinks they should provide the location service WITHOUT having to pay for MoblieMe.

Wow.

I'm having a really hard time believing that these three really are: 1) security 2) perp and 3) cop. Could I be so jaded that I don't believe a real take-down when I see one?

That's because you haven't seen one of these things happen in Union Square before. There are some pretty expensive stores there, and they have plain-clothes security for grab and run incidents. The ones I have seen have all ended up in the middle of the street, with a plain-clothes security person on top of the perp with traffic (sometimes the 38) waiting patiently behind them.

You are not jaded, just inexperienced. Feel better?

I used to work security catching shoplifters and the such at my college bookstore. We worked plain-clothes. Maybe this is fake, but nothing stands out as wrong to me.

Except for the fact that this is an unusually clear photo - thanks to the fortuitous presence of a professional photographer - this looks like a perfectly believable and, unfortunately, all too typical presentation of what happens when a shoplifting suspect resists detention.

What probably happened is that the woman on top was working undercover loss prevention (LP), believed that the other woman had shoplifted, and approached the other woman and asked her to go back to the loss prevention office. Either the woman refused or, after at first appearing to cooperate, bolted and ran. Unfortunately for her, she found out that well trained LP who are allowed by their stores to go "hands on" can and will overtake you, put you down, and slap the cuffs on you. Perfectly normal and legal. Assuming that ordinary procedure was followed I have little sympathy for the woman being cuffed. She had her chance to go along the easy way.

By the way, not living in SF, I have one question. Is the man in the picture presumably a police officer because of the "UN" letters on his clothing? Maybe someone could enlighten me.

Great photo.

I'd shoplift just as an excuse to get the hot security chick to sit on top of me.

Why didn't you take your phone back? My friend had his phone swiped on muni. They ran off the bus, he chased them, grabbed the kid who had the phone, tackled him, beat him, and took his shit back.

anyone that has had their iphone stolen and filed a police report, please contact me via brock. i have a thread going with the city attorney office about asking apple/att to be more helpful in returning your stolen property.
