Drag Queen Anna Conda (a.k.a. Glendon Hyde) Running For District 6 Supervisor
Glendon Hyde (who performs under the drag name Anna Conda and won the Miss Trannyshack competition in 2004) filed paperwork today to become a candidate for SF Supervisor in District 6 in 2010 -- the seat currently filled by Chris Daly who will be termed out as of next year. Hyde joins a race against possible candidates Jane Kim, Debra Walker, Jim Meko, and, potentially, Human Rights Commissioner Theresa Sparks.
Hyde has long been a passionate advocate for the homeless and for LGBT causes, and throughout the Prop 8 fight and aftermath, he has been marching and organizing marches (in and out of drag) in support of marriage equality.
As Supervisor, Hyde plans to advocate for more affordable housing, rehabilitation of the homeless, and the further greening of the city. In order to generate more revenue for these causes, he plans to push for the statewide revocation of Prop 13 for corporations, something which SF Assessor Phil Ting has argued could solve a lot of the state's and individual cities' budget problems.
Hyde spoke to SFist this weekend about his mission in running for the Board of Supes:
"I have been a vocal advocate against expecting the middle and lower classes to shoulder expenses due to mismanagement and missed opportunities from the wealthy and corporations. I want to raise revenues in the city that go directly to helping schools and housing the homeless. Since being a small part of the Community Housing Partnership, I have seen a grass-roots organization bloom into one with a 98% success rate in rehabilitating the homeless, and they do it through dignity. I want to do that... I want to be part of the solution and I want to do it with a truly liberal voice."I believe that I can make a difference and represent people who are not, in my opinion, getting the representation they deserve. I know some people think that because I do drag and worked in clubs I might not be fit to do this sort of work. Well, I'm intelligent, I speak well, and am 100% dedicated to the betterment of the world I live in. I have always dreamed of this day when I would take the leap and really do it. I've been encouraged by many friends and excited for the challenge. I hope those are the leadership qualities (courage to try new things, a strong support system, a honest belief in my mission and point of view) that will help me in my campaign ahead."
Good luck Anna! Below, the "Meat" video that preceded her award-winning Miss Trannyshack pageant number.
