Asm. Tom Ammiano On Glass Breaking BART Cop

46QUAD.jpg

After this weekend's headline-churning incident featuring a BART cop protecting passengers from unruly, drunk Michael Joseph Gibson, 37 -- the twist being that the officer accidentally (?) broke a pane of glass during the arrest at the West Oakland Station -- Assemblymember Tom Ammiano released the following statement:

The video of this arrest reinforces what all of us have known since the Oscar Grant tragedy earlier this year; that BART lacks adequate training and accountability for its police department. While BART’s management has at least learned the value of responding to these incidents quickly, the lesson that needs to be learned is that BART and its police department have a long way to go to restore trust with the community. The first step towards that goal is ensuring that BART has a safe, professional police department.

I look forward to working with BART in the upcoming legislative session to implement civilian oversight and other much-needed reforms for their police department.

Related: the officer, who has yet to be identified, was placed on paid "industrial leave," according to SFGate, "meaning he is unable to perform his duties because of injuries." The officer, if you recall, was hurt during the arrest.

I trust BART police more than I trust drunk BART passengers.

That's a pretty easy hurdle to stumble over. . . .

What a unfortunate knee-jerk liberal reaction. The BART officer was in the right on this.

I have to agree with you on this one. Ammiano's comments are ill-timed.

Just one more reason I'd never vote for Ammiano for mayor. Frankly, I'd like to see this BART officer working for Muni.

Me too! I just wish MUNI had any sort of police presence.

If the BART cops would just beat up anyone videotaping them, they wouldn't get into these sticky situations.

It's too bad they weren't both armed so they could kill each other.

Ammiano needs to STFU.

I would like to shove his head through a glass window. Maybe it would knock some sense into him.

"I would like to shove his head through a glass window. Maybe it would knock some sense into him."

Thanks for contributing to civil political discourse!

Of course Ammiano responded like this. He's going to run for mayor with Muni and Bart reform as his platform, so he's going to paint everything that they do in a negative light.

ugh. ammiano as mayor. four years of wackily pretending that's not exactly who the rest of the country assumes we'd elect.

the whole world is watching!

Tell me one thing that MUNI or BART has done correctly? One thing. Even this incident wouldn't have happened if BART installed reasonably thick safety glass on their platforms.

One of the few things that could get me to vote for Tom would be if he ran on a "fire Nat Ford and reform MUNI" platform.

One thing BART's done correctly? How about getting me from place to place on a regular basis? BART's hot.

Tom ran for mayor years ago and got clobbered by Willie Brown.

He also ran for mayor a second time and got clobbered by both Newsom and Gonzales.

How much Nine Inch Nails is one allowed to listen to when placed on "Industrial Leave"?

I'm pretty sure it's a formal multi-week program taught in city hall. Focus on early influences such as Throbbing Gristle and Big Black, an overview of the European industrial scene with selections from labels such as Zoth Ommog, and a special two-day intensive study of the Detroit industrial scene. 1 credit.

And apropos to the assemblyman involved, don't forget The Revolting Cocks.

I usually like Ammiano. Was "kiss my gay ass" his jump the shark moment?

At first glance, I thought that "Asm" was an abbreviation for "Assman".

Michael Joseph Gibson: A True Renaissance Man & Human Turdpile

What a crazy bunch of brutality-loving brownshirts you all are.

What brutality?

The cop was doing his job.

No, we're just really, really tired of drunks on BART.

But thanks for calling me a Nazi, classy

I never thought of it that way, but you're right! Giving a policeman the benefit of the doubt on acceptable use of force is exactly the same as killing 8 million Jews! I've got a lot of self-examination to do.

Frankly, I'd like to see this BART officer working for Muni.
