NBC Picks Up Troubled Trauma?

While it was initially rumored that NBC might kill the ratings-challenged Trauma, word is NBC decided to pick up the medical/explosions show.

Deadline Hollywood reports:

On its first airing, the Peter Berg-produced Trauma drew just 6.9 million viewers and a 2.3 rating in the key 18-49 category. On the bright side, Trauma did build on its lackluster Heroes lead-in. Also, the reviews were disappointing, a backlash came from the Emergency Medical Services community, and a hefty pricetag made it one of NBC's most expensive new fall series. It's been so much on the bubble since its debut that it was declared DOA by blogs ... But I've learned that NBC has told the show this week the network not only will produce all 13 episodes from its current order but also order more. What helped to earn a pickup? A recent ratings rise.

Needs more Siebel, too, by the way. Bring her back.

So, um, great news, right? Does this mean you all want us to live-blog each episode? Whatever we can do to make it more palatable for you. Let us know in the comments.

good for Bay Area actors. Bad for America.

How can they justify the expense of these big shows? Just sign some new reality program (about 100 a day being proposed to every network).

Word is NBC has asked them to cut the (fucking huge) budget in half. So less explosions/copter shots, more junkies ODing on the streets of the Tenderloin.

Well at least they're going for a more real plotline then.

Everyone thought Trauma was a goner, but low and behold NBC is extending it's order BEYOND the original 13 episodes. Good for SF production people, bad for fans of quality TV drama.

I can't believe this network canceled the critically acclaimed Southland, but is keeping Trauma at a price of THREE million an episode. Southland drew 9.86 million viewers with it's 1st episode, and 6.39 million with it's 7th (last) episode. Let's compare that to Trauma with only 6.93 for the 1st episode and only 5.35 million for it's 7th (recent) episode. Those are some pretty shitty numbers for a show with a bloated budget and a slot that places them as a lead-in to Heroes. WTF NBC? WTF?!!

You say being lead-in by Heroes like that's a good thing these days. Being sandwiched by a fading Jay Leno program that gets its ass kicked on a regular basis is no treat for a new show either.

Anyway, I think since they sunk so much money into it and the ratings have steadily risen that they're just gonna decide to wait and see how it does once behemoths MNF and Dancing with the Stars fade away in another couple months. The brand new NBC heads are supposedly trying to devote more time to scripted programming.

As far as the quality goes, yeah, it's not Mad Men, it's not even Law and Order, but I've seen far worse. Southland got screwed though, no doubt.

The last thing I want is for you to do more work, thus cutting into our drinking time, but that liveblog you guys did was one of the funniest things, ever.

live blog!! live blog!! love it!

Maybe it's because they finally started revealing more of the characters' stories but the last 3 episodes have been much better.

The trauma got less corny and the acting got a little bit better. I can finally "align" with some of the people but yeah I agree, eps 1-4 were crap. Lately, I actually look forward to watching it.

I hope it continues. I am kind of tired of seeing them driving down polk and then all of the sudden they're at battery & pine and saying that they're headed to broadway. That's my only complain.

yeah it's definitely gotten better. though I still think the only reason we watch it is because it takes place here and we can have fun trying to figure out exactly where they are.

+ MST3K-style riffing

Glad to hear it! Hopefully, people in San Francisco will embrace the additional $$$ it helps add to our City and hold back their urge to complain about losing parking spaces for a few days here and there.

Excellent news. Flyover country should have their noses rubbed in our natural splendor. (or in the case of the TL, squalor)

Hey, they aren't spending taxpayer money, so spend away into the local economy I say.

Trauma is filming right now near Buena Vista Park/Ashbury heights. Watching from my window--but not in a creepy way.

Oh God. That show is so bad! NBC Universal is going down the toilet. They destroyed the Sci Fi channel with this "syfy" bullshit and all those stupid Ghost Hunters shows. They canceled a bunch of GOOD shows for crap like Trauma and Mercy (really? more doctor/cop/lawyer shows?) and I kinda hope they die.

Comcast will be able to buy them for cheap so long as they keep spending their money on dreck like Trauma. I mean, they canceled "Life" for this shit? At least SF's first lady was a co-star on that one.

Haha, so you care more about Siebel's acting career than those of the hundreds and hundreds of Bay Area folks on both sides of the camera who have gotten some pretty good gainful employment from Trauma's presence here? Anyway...

(But regardless of what you think of Trauma/Mercy's quality (it's certainly up for debate), Life/Southland/whatever didn't get cancelled "for" them.)

Whatever you can do to make it more palatable:

  • Make the show all about Rabbit.
  • Cut the gay dude's sideburns.
  • Triple the number of responses to junkies to better reflect actual San Francisco EMT work.
  • More accidents involving drag queens.
  • Massiver earthquake season finale cliffhanger.
  • And lastly, kill Nancy. Has there ever been a less likable lead in a TV drama whose character wasn't meant to be unlikable? Whatever did in Valerie to make it the Hogan Family -- do it to her.
Thanks for your help. And yes, live blogging.

Yeah, in the previews Rabbit looked like a total d-bag ("I...love...my...job...") but he's far and away the most likeable/relatable character. Cliff Curtis has always been great.

They're gonna run out of accidents to have one of these days; they better start developing these characters better.

Oh yes, PLEASE more Rabbit! Cliff Curtis is wonderful. If this gets really cancelled (only a matter of time, once NBC cancels Leno and can actually put something good in the 10 p.m. spot) some other network needs to realize Cliff's talents.

And another suggestion (caveat: I'm three episodes behind): Stop making me feel like I'm watching actual EMTs going nonchalantly about their day. Maybe it's more realistic (as in, true to life, not TV "real") not to have professionals freaking out all the time, but it's BORING. While I would never let one of the Grey's Anatomy doctors touch me with a 10-foot pole, at least their meltdowns in front of patients are hilarious to watch. With "Trauma" everyone seems to be in control on the job all the time - snooze!

I can watch just about any show with SF as the backdrop - I own the entire Streets of SF series on DVD - but that show is just awful.

I'm glad it provides jobs to the locals, especially foodies, tech types and all, but goddamn, it's pretty effin bad. Kind of like the Raiders, they provide lots of jobs to ordinary people, but you just can't bear to watch.

I'm in complete agreement. Any show with an SF backdrop is my favorite, but geez, this show is 23 shades of horrible. It should be entitled "Watch people you don't care about bleed."

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what's worse, the acting or the writing? What do you think? It's a toss up for me.

But I'm thrilled it's being picked up and it brings work to actors and other production types in the city. I'd purchase a DVD just of all their flyover shots of San Francisco.

I totally blame that massive d-bag, Jay Leno, for the death of Southland. What was NBC thinking giving him the 10 PM timeslot 5 nights a week??

One problem I had with early episodes of Trauma was the lack of follow up/closure at the end of each show, but last couple of episodes have been a lot better.

I bet half those views come from people who miss home.

But alas, as previous commenters said, it HAS gotten better.
